Hello, i will be getting 1mb broadband soon and im wondering if there is anyone out there who has it already that can tell me what sort of download speeds i can expect?

Obviously it varies from provider to provider, but im looking for a ball park figure.

I was going to say that. I get 62K/s on average having moderfied my connection with Dr TCP, which I thought was a great speed on 512k line.

BT is 512K like everything else. You connect at 576 Kbps because you lose speed between you and the exchange, every 512K service connects at 576, and people think this is the speed of there connection. 72K/s is amazing if you can do that for long periods of time. A super amazing 512K would be 64K/s(512K divide by 8 = 64), so either your measuring it wrong or your connected higher than you should be.

NTL haven't yet done their upgrades, they were scheduled for late summer, last I heard. They were announced as a hurried response to Telewest's idea, so I'd image the NTL techs are now trying to work out how on earth to make the network capable of sustaining the load :)

Usual download here is somewhere around 119k/sec...ntl 1mbit

NTL did 'upgrade' but i noticed no difference.

BT Broadband (just the no frills one) is 576 Kbps. Which tops out at 72 kB per second. Though for some reason I occasionally get higher speeds, the checker thing on adslguide.org has had me running at over 600kbps on a few occasions.

Not too shady, and uncapped. Which is good.

70kbps is pretty much cable speed. Cable is weird cause if you have too many users in your street you could see quite a bit of slowdown. You should also see you speed increase more as havent all 3 cable companies upgraded the speed to 750k? Also did you have 512k? as NTL did 600k if I am not mistaken.

Cable i have got.

And soon as just about every program (other than one which says i get 300+) says i get 70kbps, i believe them.

Well ping wouldnt change much if you lived 1m away from the exchange or 6,000m away. Considering a ping that goes from London to NYC could be under 100ms then I doubt a few metres is going to have an impact.

Also the download speed shouldnt get worst with distance, it does depend on line quality and also the hardware on the PC and its settings.

Whats that on? ADSL? Cable? Cable is faster and my friend on Telewest 512K has got 70kbps. If its on ADSL then its pretty much impossible to get 70kbps so the program isnt telling you the correct speed as the maximum limit on ADSL 512K is 64kbps, as there are 8bits to a byte and 512 divided by 8 is 64.

I get about 70kbps on my 512k... I feel proud.
