ok, so my motherboard in one of my PCs has a 333mhz FSB. I just installed a 2800+ Barton into it (on a GA-7VAXP Rev1.1 Mobo).

Its on an FSB of 334 atm, never exactly on the said FSB as always.

Anyway, on a mobo with a 333mhz FSB, how much further over that could I get? I just raid in PC format I could put a better northbridge cooler on and put the excisting cooler on the southbridge to get further past the max FSB. This work!?

Thanks for any help.

With any heat transfer paste you only need to put an extremely thin layer on the cpu core, it is only for filling in the tiny gaps that the heatsink has on it, An even better way of improving cooling is to "lap" your cpu heatsink, this is easily done and really does help.

I used my switch card to apply it, it has a good consistency, not too hard to get an even spread.

Yeah you do. Use a clean plastic edged object, or something clean such as a razor blade.

Ill look forward to seeing how many pitiful mhz I can get outta this CPU, but it'll still be more than my current 1.

Read the instructions on the website, you don't use a credit card or anything like that.

Oh and whilst the mobo supposedly has a limit of 166 MHz, in reality that means it is only guaranteed to do that. For example my NF7-S "only" goes up to 200 MHz, but really I can make it run much faster than that.

The only thing I have a problem with is applying it. I aint used anything but Coolermaster premium and that's a nightmare! I have a tube of Artec here in front of me as well as instructions and reviews, and apparantly its very easy to apply. I shall look forward to putting it on with my only credit card, lol.

I know how to overclock, but there's no point raising the FSB past 333 cos it wont do much seeing as that is its limitation.

My CLS is 2 atm, so I'll get better performance if i leave it as it is and dont have to lower it to 2.5

Push up your FSB until your RAM drops out, then increase the chipset and DDR voltages when you encounter ceilings.

Drop your CPU multiplier so your chip's in spec.

Make sure you increase your RAM timings to get the best performance.

yeah, thought so. It'll be riding on the max FSB when i install it anyway.

Whats everyones thoughts on Arctec Silver 5?

Depends on what the maximum FSB you can get on your board is. At 200 MHz FSB you would be running at 2.5 GHz. That would be rather high, and unlikely on that board. Also it would require a 1/6th divider, else the PCI and AGP buses would be running at 40 MHz, which is considerably out of spec. Max you can get away with running the PCI bus out of spec is approx. 36 MHz, but I wouldn't go above 35 MHz probably. That gives a max FSB of 175 MHz, giving a clock speed of 2187 MHz without changing the multiplier.

Depending on what week the chip is from, you may have an unlocked multiplier, you may not. If you do, then instead of using a 12.5 multiplier, you could keep the FSB at 166 MHz and use say a 14 multiplier to reach 2324 MHz. If it is locked, you need a better motherboard to get good overclocks out of it.
