Only for the barometer to be gone and in its place is a pop-up that says "good news - your exhange will be broadband enabled before the 4th of august 2004". Cue the celebratory dancing and a trip to adslguide.org to see if they could shed some light on what just happened.
Apparently our exchange is part of a Scottish Lowlands Partnership, i dont know any more details than that, but to be honest i dont really care, im getting broadband and thats all that matters.
If there are people out there who still havent met their trigger, dont despair. There is always hope. :)

Yep I got a single impersonal email letting me know that "due to an error"
They had billed me not once, not twice, but three times for the month of March, and "unfortunately would be unable" to refund the overbilled amount blah blah blah.

You probably worked out the price from the one page where it tells you the price for the first year? If so then you have to factor in the connection charge, and depending on which package the modem as well.

I have AOL. Sometimes, when it is loading page, if it thinks the work is a bit too strenuous for it it shuts down. Other times it just disappears for no reason at all. And of course, there is always that "Welcome to AOL" just to put your teeth on edge.

Oh, i thought pipex were £37.99.
This makes the decision tougher.

AOL have given me perfect service for years. I really can't complain about them.
Pipex are cheap, as cheap as the others if not cheaper. Bulldog 1Mb is £32.99 Pipex are £33.99 and AOL £34.99.
One thing with Pipex is that they have major backbone bandwidth. They have about 110,000 customers 4th largest ADSL ISP behind BT, AOL, and Freeserve. I think that they have twice as much bandwidth as customers which is a good thing to know.
Dont take the ratings on adslguide as truth as Pipex support have been excellent in my case. Phones can be busy but with 110,000 odd customers a major outage is going to affect alot of people. I have always got through pretty quick and if there is a major problem its on the waiting message so you dont often need to speak to someone. The outages I have suffered have been because of BT, once I think was down to Pipex, and I got a froze session :(. A froze session is when the exchange and ISP think I am logged in but I am not and the card at the exchange needs resetting. Pipex actually phoned up a few weeks later to see if it was all ok.
Personnally I am happy with Pipex, before I went with them I had not heard of them and I didnt know if I was doing the right thing, but if I had to chose now I would still chose Pipex. Why? Because I know what sort of network they have there commitment to providing ADSL etc. Plus at the moment I get 1Mb for £28.95 a month :D.
For the sake of £12 a year Pipex are probably the better choice. If your exchange was one that Bulldog support with up to 6Mb then maybe go with them if you could afford it.
On another note some other ISPs to check out or PlusNet, Nildram, Eclipse and Zen. All of these are top ISPs which rival Pipex for being decent on speed etc.
Stay away from AOL.
I would look at Eclipse and Nildram. Both outrank most other providers on everything else.

We will be going for 1mb, since i will be sharing the connection with my brother (which we do now, the speed is hellish). We were thinking of the 2mb primetime service from bulldogDSL, but unforunately that service isnt available here yet. At the moment im not sure which ISP we will go for, AOL has been great with our dial up, but they are quite expensive, bulldog are cheapest, but have a lower speed average than AOL, whilst Pipex are the fastest, the most expensive but have poorer customer service than AOL.
Its a mindjob. :S
From what I've seen, I'd suggest bulldogdsl.com
That's who we're considering going with.
> Americans have like 100mb connections don't they?
Nah. 5Mb cable is probably the max for a home user if their in a major city. 3Mb is pretty much standard for most cable companies and even DSL.
100Mb is what you get in Sweden for like £50 but you do need to be next door to the exchange. The thing with Sweden is they have at least 2 companies which compete with each other to offer the fastest and cheapest connection. Live pretty close to the exchange and you can get 26Mb VDSL which is 26Mb down and up :D for the price we pay for 1Mb :D.
Japan and South Korea also have extreme bandwidth, there equivalant to our 56K is 12Mb as its only something like £10 a month :D
Then the Aussies get worst than we do as they have the same speeds but you only get a few Gb a month data transfer, break this and you get charged per Gb over or something or you get shoved to 56K speeds. Some ISPs in the UK are doing this sort of thing now where its limited to only a few Gb a month. But these ISPs are offering them at cheap rate which is good for people who dont use much, as they still get fast speeds at the price of 56K alltime access.
Anyway good job Cookie, you will have broadband soon :D Now you have to chose who you want. Its coming up to 2 years in June since we had broadband in our area. Our exchange needed no registerations as it was before they came into effect.
What speed will you get? 512K is fast but 1Mb is nice as you can get about 420mb and hour. 512K is a nice starter as you will be in awe for at least a month on how fast it actually is. After time it becomes slower as your use to the speed and you want the 200mb file in 30 mins not an hour. 1Mb is nice but for me its getting slow :D Want to get 2Mb as everything will be twice as fast.
