I've not really much idea myself. I said supposedly because it was what "guitarist expert" friend told me, and seemed to make sense.
But yeah, technically better does mean better all round.

Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Squire remain my all time favourites. :-)

The Stones were around as 1962 and had "put the sex and drugs into rock and roll" by 67. Only a year after Hendrix but that's all that was necessary for the influence and although The Who were still mods before Zep, I wasn't talking of the clothes.

I wasn't talking of direct rip-offs or conscious copy cating, but they seemed to mix and match the cream (talking of which, I bet Clapton's band was an influence too) of each style to create the ultimate rock n roll image.

I'm not putting them down at all, but you don't get ANYTHING from nothing.

Mm, maybe Page wasn't technically incredible, i.e. clean, but that's half the reason why he rocked so much. Listening to Heartbreaker, his solo is extremely dirty, but it rules beyond comparison to anything Slash has done.

Hmm....not really. Zeppelin (with two E's) pre-date the Stones, formed only one year after Hendrix arrived on the scene and although The Who formed much earlier, they had a different look in the early days.

And from what I have heard of the Guns and Roses, although Slash is supposed to be technically better than Jimmy Page, the fact is that their style (image, sound, the rest) is pretty much Zep based.

Zepplin took bits of the Stones, Hendrix, the Who, and anyone else, and created the modern Rock and Roll Cliché.

Or perhaps he meant "Your Time Will Come" by a different Roses, who happen to be the REAL best band of all time, only I won't go there because I'd have to fight off the entire board with only a select few like Unbeliever to take my side. :-D

Just so I can be clear, Guns N Roses were directly influenced by Led Zepellin. Saying they're better would be like saying Oasis are better than the Beatles, or Greenday are better than The Clash, or Blank is better than Goatboy.
