Ahh, my second new topic in 5 minutes, yep, I'm getting back into using my pc again. I'll be pestering people about the web site I'm working on soon if I'm not careful :^)

As a combination of cheapskate and wannabe nerd, a year ago I began to build myself a pc. I bought the case then bust my shoulder, had to leave my job and couldn't afford to continue.
Now I'm starting up again.

I have a reasonable idea of my way around a pc, I know all the internal bits I need (I think) - except cables maybe, but I should be able to figure that out when I try to put everything together...

So then there's putting everything together. I knew a guy who did it by trial and error - is that a good idea? Seemed a bit reckless to me.

Can anyone recommend a good how-to web guide?

And can I expect to have to fiddle around in bios with drivers and stuff for everything, or should the first start-up just be a matter of firing up an OS ?

Cheers

Heh, I just clicked "register" and it worked.

Just don't enter your details.

(this has been used on 3 computers now..)

Although that message got cut short, I think I know what you were going to say. You were going to say what you could do about the activation weren't you?

Well you could buy a new Windows CD; or you could activate it on that computer and not update the old one again. Actually, with it being such a big "upgrade", i.e. a new system, you might need to phone MS.

Or there is the illegal key gens. I wouldn't judge, but I can't help you never having used one. However others on here have.

Ah, you beat me too it.

Ah, and adaptor sounds like the best idea. Any idea where I could buy one from?

(The molex plugs are those 4 pin ones that fit cd drives etc, right?)

On another note, SHE LIVES!

She's up and running :^)

Another problem though: 'Hypothetically', if I were to put win xp on my computer, using the same Code of Authenticity as is on my family's computer, then realise that xp wants me to register it in the next 30 days,

Could I legally register it on both? (Optomistic I know!)

Could I bypass the 30 day thing somehow?

Or do you think I could register it and no-one would notice? (Optomistic again...)

Or would I be better using a copy of win 98 instead?
If so how do I undo the partition that xp put on my hdd?

I hate you Gates, and all your efforts to stop people ripping you off :^D

Now that is a better idea gamezfreak, don't know why I never thought of it.

Underclocking?! You disappoint me! If you want to do something about noise get some of the rubber mat things and the cladding for a case. Pfft. The other solution is to put the PC in a box. No seriously, I have my PC in a cabinet normally mistaken for a wardrobe. When I shut the doors I hear virtually nothing.

Get a 3 to 4 pin fan connector converter, which allows you to run your fan off a PSU molex :)

heh heh I've become dependent on my fan controller, Ive got a Digi Tv card installed now so I underclock the PC at night to 100mhz FSB, then use the fan controller so the case fans are running at just under 7 Volts - next step is watch some late night tv, from the comfort of my bed - without the whooshing sound!!

Winner!

DIY (scissors/penknife, sellotape, length of wire) is probably the easiest, cheapest cable extension solution...

Great minds think alike eh Tig? I think a fan controller would be going overboard in this system to be honest. I have one, and it all it really does is have 3 blue lights on it to make it look good.

I've never seen fan cable extensions to be honest. Or 2 into 1 adaptors. The reason for that would be 2 fans would draw too much current from the motherboard, possibly damaging it.

Most fans nowadays don't even connect to the MB, most just use normal molex connectors like the hard drive etc. Ebuyer were selling bog standard case fans, 80 mm ones, for 47p each. The only thing about them is that they don't have a yellow wire, which is used for speed detection. No big deal actually.
