That thought is that if we took away all the "bad" things in life, pain, suffering, etc. completely (as most would agree is apparently what is meant to happen in heaven) then what does that leave us with? These "bad" things are what makes us, well, us!
I can only speak for myself here, but I feel that he bad things in my life are what attributed most to the definition of my character. I feel stronger inside because of some of them, and I know I have the capacity to deal with the tough issues in life.
Getting myself into scrapes let me grow as a person and gave me an understanding of situations I otherwise would not have. I have a vast amount of experience in some areas that have proved beneficial to others that have found themselves in similar circumstances, or wanted to understand these circumstances.
I guess in a way what I am trying to say is that in a perfect environment you are taking away the "silver linings", and if you take away the silver linings, all you are left with is the cloud.
