Hello there, I'm having one of those burning ambitions to start creating a website for myself, a small business I want to start and well, just general stuff I guess. Now obviously, a website needs to: -

a) Look good
b) Easy to navigate
c) Have a polished look

But there's a slight problem, I'm rubbish and designing and making websites, and to be honest, it's not really a main interest of mine. Websites i've started in the past have been unfinished because I got bored, or just too crap to worth mentioning. I have no motivation to build one, I prefer to do some programming instead, in C mainly.

Anyway, I need help, I just want to make a simple website thats not cluttered, and is well, simple, a few pictures and a short bit of text. Most people have told me to learn CSS, but I really don't see the beneifit of it, and I usually just end up opening the commandline and start programming in C again.

So has anyone got any tips they can give me to just get a simple, nice looking website up and running ?

Oh and I need an idea on good hosts aswell.

I am trying to develop some websites and can do only the most basic design (see http://www.tauroscatology.com). This has been a rod for my back because site changes have knock-on effects that take ages to fix. I'm trying to learn stylesheets but am going to slowly. I need someone who can create discussion lists, interactive features, shops, databases, easy updating, etc, etc. This could be on a profit share or paid basis. The site I admire most is Battersea Dog Homes but I am not looking for anything as ambitious as that.

Initially I would like to create a site which enables registered users to post and delete their own ads (giving me the power to delete anything naasty). The ads would have to expire after a certain period of time unless the advertiser logged on to renew them.

Anyone interested?

I found that guide pretty good, sums up every attribute you can get...

I think!

Just had a quick look on that site, I had no idea how useful CSS could be. Assigning certain font attributes and the like to

,

etc. is brilliant. I'll have to have a look at it in between Perl and my online CV.

I've never really bothered with CSS much (other than tags instead of and use it for borders), but from what I've read here it seems pretty much... essential.

Any good free tutorials you people can recommend?
