I'm buying an electric guitar next week some time and I'm not going to pay for lessons (Spending all my cash on the guitar) so I need a reasonably priced guide book to help me learn. I really don't know a great deal about music so It would have to be a beginners book - I know a few of you here play the guitar so I wondered if you had any recommendations, or perhaps books you don't use any more and would lend/sell me.

Cheers as always guys.

Unless you happen to live in Solihull, then you'll realise quickly there are actually no music shops within a 50 mile radius.

Kyle, haul your ass into town and look for a music shop.

You'll get by far a better deal there, and the people know what they're talking about.

No. Seriously - no. Encore make the worst guitars in existence. I should know, I used to own one. Until it stopped working after 3 weeks. My friend also had one but realised after he got it back from the shop that there were loads of cracks in it, then he went to get a replacement and checked for cracks in the shop - there were loads in that one too.

They also have a horrible action.
Instead of getting a crap guitar and then buying a better one when you get better you should just start out with a half decent one that'll last a while.

Yamaha Pacificas are cheap and cheerful. Squier Strats are ok but the buzz from the single coil pickups will get irritating if you're going to be using a lot of distortion.

Total Rock Guitar by Troy Stetina. £9. Best beginners book ever. Really is very very good. Also, get Total Guitar every month for a year. That's how I learned.

So, um, trying not to state the obvious, have you tried replacing it?
