This is starting to get annoying. I don't know how long it's been happening, but it's only a few weeks ago I realised it always happened on a Friday. That narrows it down a bit I guess.

Sometimg in the late afternoon or evening (I don't think it's the exact same time every week) my computer basically freezes up. I get booted off MSN, mouse responses become virtually zero, and keyboard responses incredibly laggy (up to a minute in lag). I end up having to hit the reset button, because if I try to reboot not only will it take me five minutes to get to and select 'shut down', but it takes a further 15 to do all the 'end program' boxes because nothing is responding.

So.... what the hell is causing this? Or more to the point, how the hell do I track it down and eliminate it without formatting and resinstalling everything?

I can't think of any obvious software I've got running. I've done virus checks (using AVG) and spyware checks (with Ad-Aware)and nothing comes up there either. Is there perhaps some kind of conflict with something else?

I guess it's possible I've got something checking for weekly updates and it's not compatible for some reason. Again though, how can I possibly narrow it down without checking everything?

Any ideas?

I know somebody who DJs/plays in a band with his laptop. He was doing a gig once when his autoscan started up, the machine packed it in, the room fell silent and he was left looking very, very silly.

That's the one I was using on my ME machine. Good it is too. Maybe it was you that told me about it.

That's what I was thinking.
It used to happen to me - I'd be playing Fifa or something, and everything minimized and went funny and stuff, so I just hit the reset button.

But one time I actually waited to see what it was, and it was Norton Anti-V.
So meh, I've stopped it doing now.

And that was every Friday too, which is funny.

Sounds like some virus or something if explorers jumps to 99% so severely.

The best one is based on the XP one but done for the 9x windows system (ME), and best of all its free!

I've tried bringing up task manager whilst my computer's screwed up to locate the problem before now, but nothing unusual shows up. All I get is system idle on 99%, and maybe 1% on explorer. Although that said, it does occasionally then seem to jump up to 99% on explorer before going back down again immediately afterwards.

It's windows XP + SP1 that I'm running, and the task scheduler is also empty.

I was beginning to suspect find-a-drug was screwing something over, but I guess that's not it. May try turning it off next friday just in case though.

Actually I do have another idea, check your scheduled tasks via the control panel. I'm not sure, but I think it is possible to schedule disk defragmenter to run in the background at a certain time.

I don't know what could actually cause that. It sounds like there is some sort of trojan on your machine or something though.

What version of Windows are you running? If it is XP, or 2000, then bring up the task manager and take a look at the processes normally running. Then next time it does it, look to see what else is running. Better yet, the giveaway would be the huge processor usage. I know you've been running Find A Drug, but it doesn't do anything weird on Fridays. It's think.exe incidentally. The other thing that also has high processor "usage" is System Idle Process.

If you use Windows 98 or ME or any other version without a full task manager, you can install third party ones that tell you what processes are running.

Other than that, and updating the anti virus and adware programs, I'm out of ideas.
