I think I said something like:
" Sorry, we were camping in a field but left because bloody cows/sheep or whatever was in it so we came back just to wait here until its late enough to wake up parents to get home. We'll move if its causing any trouble. "
We moved on and went to the shop later on to get breakfast.
They were very nice about it, they also helped catch someone that beat a friend up.
(I saw a rear bumper sticker with that on the other week)
