I'm a hi-fi enthusiast. Mine is on virtually the entire time I'm awake either playing music from the CD player, music from my Mac or the sound from the TV, video or PS2.

I bought an amplifier some years ago - an Audiolab 8000S - and paid £500 for it; it sounded absolutely superb and it still does. I wanted the CD player to go with it, but couldn't afford it, so I bought a different one instead. Since then I've hardly seen the CD player I wanted for sale anywhere because they don't make them anymore.

Lately I've been, not depressed exactly, but things in my life haven't been going as planned. I've 'umm'ed and 'arr'ed as to what I could do to cheer myself up (apart from kicking the missus out!) and the conclusion I came to was to buy myself something nice.

The next day, I was idly browsing another forum and I saw this ...

"For Sale : Audiolab 8000CDM/DAC Combo"
http://forum.hifichoice.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=9116

... and thought: "It's a sign!" If you're wondering, the 8000CDM and 8000DAC are the CD transport and digital to analogue converter (the two parts that make up a conventional one-box CD player) that match my amplifier. Hurrah!

But, then I thought "I can't afford £825!?! ARGH!!" and so I sulked for a while.

I sent a friend a jokey email asking him to lend me the money and the reply was "Sure - when do you want it?" Hang on!?! He said "Yes"?!? After I checked he wasn't cruelly winding me up, he said "You've helped me out loads of times in the past, financially and otherwise, and knowing what a sad git you are I know you'd love to buy them. So: yes." Who says Karma doesn't work?

So, there you go: my mate's lending me the money to buy what I've been wanting for about 7 years or so. Lucky me!

It's a bit of a funny situation ...

Officially she's my carer so she can't just up sticks and leave as I'd be stuck. And by the same token she hasn't got anywhere else to go at the moment and, even though we don't get on like we used to, I'm not about to turf her out onto the street.

So, once we've sorted ourselves out regarding my care and her lodgings she'll be moving out.

You said a while ago you were getting rid of her, but it seems you still haven't done it. Are you waiting for a special time to do it? Like her birthday....
