I suppose this is particularly aimed at the computer science people who have done this sort of stuff at uni: any book or tutorial suggestions?

I'm keen on getting my hands on a seemingly abandoned open source project that *could* be really useful to me if it wasn't seriously flawed. I can sort of see what is wrong but as I'm totally ignorant of the language I don't know how to fix it.

I can already program so I'd be looking for more of a 'get to grips with the langauge's features' book than anything else. I grabbed the tutorials from the Sun website and haven't had much of a look at it as yet, but I'm more inclined to have a weighty tome on my desk than squint at a screen and constantly flick between windows. If there are any really good online tutorials then I'd still be happy to use those.

Cheers.

The ones I used were

Java First Contact - Roger Garside, John Mariani
Java Collections: An Introduction to Abstract Data Types, Data Structures and Algorithms

Uni recommend these ones now though for its java classes

An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming in Java (2e) by C. Thomas Wu. McGraw-Hill 2001. ISBN 0-07-118195-4

FLANAGAN, D., JAVA in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference for Java Programmers, 3rd edition, 1999, ISBN 1-56592-487-8

GOODRICH, M. T. and TAMASSIA, R. Data Structures and Algorithms in Java, John Wiley & Sons, 1997, ISBN 0-471-19308-9

Might have a few eBooks too if you want them.

Also if you get stuck with things just ask.

[email protected] is my MSN if you need it.

The Java API is really good. My girlfriend has a very good Java book I can't recall the name of at the moment, and I probably have a number of Java ebooks I haven't looked at. If you want them just post here and I'll host them/send them to you.

Java is really easy if you know OO and you're not scared of C-like syntax.

I got myself a copy of Java for students by Bell and Parr.

That got me through 1 year of computer science work, but then i was forced to give it up.
