I suppose this is particularly aimed at the computer science people who have done this sort of stuff at uni: any book or tutorial suggestions?

I'm keen on getting my hands on a seemingly abandoned open source project that *could* be really useful to me if it wasn't seriously flawed. I can sort of see what is wrong but as I'm totally ignorant of the language I don't know how to fix it.

I can already program so I'd be looking for more of a 'get to grips with the langauge's features' book than anything else. I grabbed the tutorials from the Sun website and haven't had much of a look at it as yet, but I'm more inclined to have a weighty tome on my desk than squint at a screen and constantly flick between windows. If there are any really good online tutorials then I'd still be happy to use those.

Cheers.

That is a good free book with plenty of help in it.

I have ebooks on practically all issues relating to Java programming. I was going to upload all of them but the zip was 180MB :O(

If you need anything more specific, do let me know. I added you and adrian to my msn.

Cheers Miserableman, looks like some good stuff in there.

I found an excellent looking (and free) book while I was searching about last night - Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/ I don't think it's a beginner's book really but if you can already handle C syntax then it should be really good. It won some kind of award too.

In all seriousness, Java is a good learning language, to learn it properly you have to learn more than just the syntax and semantics, you need to learn how to design and construct object-oriented code.

Thanks guys. I would like those ebooks please. My dusty, unused msn account is [email protected] or you can use [email protected]. But if other people want the ebooks then it might be easier to host them; I'll stick them up on my webspace in any case.

I'll have a look at the real life books too. I'm quite tempted by Beginning Java 2 by I Horton: personal reccommendation + rave reviews on Amazon.

After spending a couple of hours with the Sun tutorials I'd have to agree - much less wailing and gnashing of teeth than programming in C++.

In case anyone's interested the program I'm interested in altering/robbing from is a Spanish vocabulary builder that should (in theory) be able to conjugate verbs: http://sourceforge.net/projects/spanishvocab/
