A friend of mine let himself drown in a pond 4 years ago, so I would argue differently Bell and FFF.

Nah, FFF is right, your body won't give up and let you drown. What he means is that you cannot just jump in the water and slip beneath the surface without a struggle. People drown who throw themselves in the sea because they cannot rescue themselves or the power of the sea overcomes them.
