I ordered 512MB of PC4000 RAM with the aim of overclocking my 2.8 P4 to insane speeds, however as soon as I lift the FSB above 214 the system refuses to boot - exactly the same speed it stopped booting at when I tried this with PC3200 RAM!!!

STUUUUPID motherboard (Asus P4v800-x; based on VIA PT800 chipset) I have tried every timing combination my MoBo will allow me...

so its time for a spanking new P4 MoBo...

MUST be excellent overclocker, reasonable price would be good as well...any ideas please??

Well if it is a C you have then I would be less inclined to shift. It was sounding like you might have had a B or something. B's don't OC well.

I've heard of A-data, mostly good stuff. However my TwinMOS Value PC3200 is fine for me, it runs fine at 223 MHz.

2.5 GHz Athlon ~= 3.55 GHz P4. I have however put it back to stock until I sort out the cooling a bit. I'm thinking of trying to fit my Jet 7 fan on to a Thermalright SLK 800 heatsink. Using Arctic Silver 5 no less.

I always knew the Jet 7 was far from the best performer, but I really like it. And if I can get some improvement, I'll sacrifice a few degrees in favour of the greatest looking fan ever.

You now have a well decent setup. Or at least you should when the new motherboard arrives.

I had considered that but I paid loads for the 2.8c when it first came out - so I want to make the most of it, I cant sell it because its lost so much value of the last few months and anyway I dont have the protective packing bits anymore :-(

whats that the equiv of in P4 terms??

A-data 2x512MB PC4000, a-data is a little known Taiwanese manufacturer but they seem to be pumping out quality RAM at excellent prices, in a roundup of OCZ vs CORSAIR vs GEIL (I think) this ram came out tops - able to hit speeds of 567mhz when the closest competitor refused to boot in the region on 540!!!

You're getting a new mobo? I would be thinking of shifting platforms at that point.

It'll be a C. Nothing else overclocks all that great.

Of course it is perfectly natural. I was thrilled when I got my PC to post at 2.5 GHz. Bear in mind it is an Athlon.

What type of RAM did you go with in the end?

Yeah Cookie Monster posted a link a while back...

Colin;

Which revision of the 2.8 P4 are you able to overclock to 3.6Ghz??

I've ordered Abit's new AI7 board based on the 865 chipset at a very reasonable price - *somewhere - its got its own version of the PAT feature found in the overpriced 875 based boards, and in tests out performed intel's very own branded 875 board (both at stock)!!!

*Very DEEP in the net... took hours of googling and kelkooing and dealtiming...

Im also the worlds most stupidly impulsive internet shopper - I just ordered another DDR500 module to take advantage of the dual channel functionality offered by the board... BELIEVE me when I say Im not proud of that, I feel like a super nerd - spending money in the name of syncronous CPU:RAM and mega bandwidth...etc etc etc

Is it normal to get excited about such things??! - I've gone as far as explaining to my flatmate what its all about... she politely nodded and headed to the fridge to get me a can of larger

hmm

You may also want to look into the fact that you cpu may not go much higher than that, I had a P4 2.8 which i overclocked in my Abit Is7 board and found that it would only run stable at 3gig anything after that and unit would not boot at all, Then i got myself a new P4 2.8 chip (which i still have) and i clock it to 3.6gig on normal cooling and am sure i can push it further on better cooling.

I would advise you get a motherboard with an intel chipset. I would go for the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe "Canterwood" personally (http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/ (SPACE) socket478/p4c800-e_d/overview.htm). On Toms Hardware they got a P4 in this mobo to 5225 MHz using liquid Nitrogen (-196*C).
