I don't get it. All the fuss and furore over going to war in Iraq, so the American people are looking more and more likely to replace Bush with a candidate who's main selling point is that he is a...war hero!? I mean, come on, 2+2 equals how much?

I don't disagree or agree because it's not something that I know enough about in detail to make any kind of judgement. Yep, I know there was a shambolic retreat at the end by US forces, but that doesn't define the rest of the campaign in itself.

Oh right, you don't agree with these people. You should have made that clear before you posted their opinions.

On another note, and going back to the original post. who are we to talk? We wanted a labour government and then voted in Blair :P

Do you ever actually read what I type? No? I didn't think so.

Key phrases you may like to actually trace back to my posts;

"plenty of authors"
"argument runs that"

Belldandy, you need to stop taking on hopeless causes. Arguing that the Vietnam war was a successful and worthy campaign is going to get you nowhere.

True, but his reason for being deposed is more likely his complete and utter incompetence and stupidity rather than his leading the country to war...

*sigh* Yeah tons of dead people are always a great source for a joke aren't they?

Anyway, the argument runs that, whilst the war consumed massive amounts of manpower, munitions and suchlike, it DID tie down the communist forces for ages, it meant that when they eventually overran the country that it was devestated and hence not much of a prize, plus it forced China and the USSR into providing costly help.

The other things, which are not part of that argument, is that Vietnam lead to significant changes in the world's military forces, new technology, new practices - especially in emergency medical care, and other things which would otherwise never have happened so soon.

There are plenty of authors who argue Vietnam was a victory in terms of what it achieved.

You see, I didn't know that. Shows how much media headlines and buzzwords dominate your impressions and opinions of people. My original point about Bush's waning popularity in the aftermath of a war, and replacing him with a war hero still stands though.
