Ok, fair enough.
I think it gets a lot of unfair acclaim JUST because it's a foreign film and people want to seem as though they have a little critical integrity. I'm not aiming this at you, by the way - it's just a general impression I get. Personally, I've seen much better French films and romantic comedies.
Groundhog Day is much better in my opinion, and check Channel 4 in the Summer nights for some great French movies.
Good, based on a true story as well helps
But I'm not pretending I like them.

Hmmm, can't say I agree with you there. It may sometimes intrude upon what is happening on screen, but I personally find them far, far less annoying and distracting than dubbed movies. Unless of curse it's badly dubbed Kung Fu flicks, as thats the ONLY way to watch them. :)

I disagree. I think it's the best romantic comedy I have ever seen, and a work of absolute genius.
DVD : Reloaded
VHS : Fight Club
Cinema: Return of the King - 8/10.
DVD: Godfather pt. III - 8/10.

Subtitles are annoying. They detract from the cinematic nature of the film and divert your attention from what's actually going on. While it may be the only decent way to appreciate foreign films (direct translations just don't work), I'm not going to say I don't mind them. Because I do.
Did anyone see Amelie? It was a shame you had to keep reading the subtitles because it was a nicely made film. Not as brilliant as it has always been made out to be, but quite good/quirky nonetheless.
