I know it's a bit late but I wrote one for Ciao and thought I'd also post it on here as a GAD attempt only to find they don't sell that particular DVD. Hmph. Ack well I still thought I'd post it here for you guys to view. Enjoy:

Pirates Of The Carribean
------------------------

Don't you just love it when you're walking through you're local HMV and find a gem of a DVD in their half price sale? You know what I mean, a film like Gattaca or Top Gun. Well Pirates Of The Caribbean may not be as innovative as Gattaca or emotional as Top Gun but this is definitely a modern day masterpiece that you definitely wont regret paying full price for.

By the director of the popular horror film, The Ring, Gore Verbinski has delivered a spectacular film with a cast that some directors can only dream of. The up and coming A-List elf Orlando Bloom delivers a surprisingly good performance as the dashing young Will Turner, the dazzling Keira Knightley who plays the perfect love interest and Cap'n Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp.

Mr. Depp delivers a stunning performance after a fair few years out off the movie making game in his come back film, and what a come back it is. His fabulously camp performance as the comical yet skilled pirate of the seven seas is one that simply does not disappoint. His cheeky little comments provide well-needed light relief in this otherwise generic pirate movie.

"Welcome to the Caribbean love!" Says the apathetic scally wag in an attempt to get Keira to loosen up and drink some Rum. Just like a real pirate. It's grade A material I'll tell you that.

Now, I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good film without him only that without Cap'n Jack this film would have far too much doom and gloom for your average viewer, which, in itself can be comical.

The plot itself is a solid one typical of the genre and as you would have guessed from the 12 certificate it's a bit darker than usual for a Disney film. The CG for example allows us to see the skeleton remains of a crew of the damned. Probably not a good idea to play the lenient parent with this one and show it to your kids. I'm 16 and still jumped out of my seat the first time I saw one of them!

However this is not about me looking like a jumping fool in the cinema. This is a list of my opinions; you may not like them; you may not agree with them but don't argue! "Do you think it wise to cross blades with a pirate” I don’t! So go and buy a copy from the shops or plunder your mates house and take his for a stunning adventure on the high seas.

You're right they are amazing films. I didn't mean to give across the impression that I am scared of films with violence or find them morally wrong or whatever only that I normally prefer other films. I don't go "Oh yes violence and gore great I'll have to see that!!" I just meant to say that really violent films don't often appeal to me in any significant way.

Even with the effects it's top notch.

That's just ballcocks, I've told you many, many times. In this thread, even. I said that putting an emoticon after every sentence without even leaving a space in between makes you sound like the six year old the Mystique mistook you for. You said: Wah wah wah stop it stop it.

I've told you how to behave a little better when "going with your gut" in Life, you just ignore it. Don't play the martyr, because you're dead wrong for that role.

The crowd being...? Me, that's who. I'm a one man crowd. First ever.

Gattaca is OK, bit slow.

"The Godfather trilogy - No
Taxi Driver - Yes
The Shawshank Redemption - No
The Deer Hunter - No
Goodfellas - No

In my defence though there are a lot of great films that I have seen but aren't full of sickening violence which isn't my thing."

I'm sorry, but I've lost the last shred of respect I had for you. I can understand that my wrestling and Queen obsessed college friend hasn't seen films like that, because he's a freak. He only saw Jurassic Park a year or two ago and only saw The Matrix when I lent it to him. But a MEDIA student who hasn't seen Goodfellas? By God...

You have THE worst taste in films. You go on about stuff like Titanic being classics; they're not. Sure, I don't hate most of the films you bark on about like everyone else, but even I know they're not THAT good, and I like Michael Bay films! Michael Bay for God's sake!

You don't like "sickening violence"? That screams of a mummy's boy who wasn't allowed to watch 18s as a child. Sounds like you share your parents' opinion of films. I bet you think porn is sick too (either that, or you watch it every night)

Go watch Robocop, Terminator, Total Recall and Starship Troopers. They may be full of "sickening violence" but they're amazing films.

Fool.

I really would advise it it is FANTASTIC. It is all about designer babies in the future. Parents have the choice to concieve naturally and have inferior babies called "Invalids" or have their babies genes altered and improved in a lab.

All naturally born babies are just called "Invalids" but all these genetically superior babies are given different ratings between 1 and 10. This system is such a huge part of life in this bleak prophecy of things to come that if you want to do a job they simply take a blood sample and if your genes are good enough you can do whatever you want.

Gattaca is focused around a family that had one Invalid and one Gentic super child. The invalid has huge ambitions of getting into the space program and going into the stars. Unfortunately his genes mean he can't get a job as anything but a cleaner. It doesn't matter how hard he studies or how much he trains his genes will allways hold him back.

This is when he makes a stand. He disappears from all known contact, makes a deal with shady character and swaps his identity with that of a geneticly modified man. He has a rating of 9.9 or something. Extremely well made. Unfortunately "There is no gene for fate" and after crippling his legs in an accident he can't achieve anything anymore. The best he can hope for is to make a living out of giving his identity to this invalid for vast amounts of money.

This is when they become best friends. Getting into the space program is now exceedingly easy for him however keeping everyone convinced he is this man and not himself is harder than expected. No one uses pictures anymore, everything is done through DNA so they have to stay together so that bits of hair, blood and so on from the genetic man can be given to the invalid to convince everyone he is the man on file.

This is where I could go on about how hard he tries to show himself at the standards the computers say he should meet but basically what really makes it amazing is as they understand genes so well they can predict their deaths. He was supposed to die of heart failure years before he even went into space. He struggles on though and eventually realises his dream and goes into the stars.

Christ I didn't actually mean to spraff on like that. Sorry:S Just it's such a good film I just found myself continually typing heh:D

The Godfather is 90% excellent dialogue and plotline concerning the Italian-American Mafia. Very little sickening violence, and mostly an exceptional film about the corruption of power.

The Shawshank Redemption has two gunshots in it.

The Deer Hunter is an emotional film.

Goodfellas is yet another film focusing on a great Mafia storyline rather than the gory/excessively violent side of being a gangster.

Films that ARE full of sickening violence are usually crap. But fortunately, there's not a huge amount of them.

I've seen The Birds and Psycho out of those you mention. I hadn't even heard of Gattaca up until this point; I might have to give it a watch if it's such a classic.
