Why is that cat brown?
What is wrong with you?
How are you feeling?
Is that a frown?
Who? What? Where?
Why? Can't I?
Go away.

I'd pay to read the posts of anyone who can find meaning in that or at least appreciate it in any way shape or form.

Blank I have not changed my view point at all. That is exactly what I've said the entire time. I shall list the occurences if you wish:

>"I am of the opinion that all human beings have the right to be respected for who they are and the choices they make in life."

>"Respect n. 3. Willingness to show consideration or appreciation." This is the kind of respect I'm talking about as I said not your definition.

>"No, but they respect me for who I am and what I do."

>"I would never disrespect anybody I know and I feel I am a better person for that."

In each of these instances it is clear that I am willing to give people respect for who they are and the decisions they make. I never once refer to it as you do.

Finally I think my definition makes a huge difference as that is what I mean by respect. I am willing to show consideration and appreciation to everyone I meet because I believe they deserve to be treated a civility and a respect.

Oh, and by the way, your definition of respect doesn't make a jot of difference, and I've said nothing about "great deeds," merely that respect is earned through thoughts, beliefs and actions (and probably other stuff as well, but that's the basics. I'm not limiting it to those three).

Exactly: for who they are and the choices they make! Not blindly, as you've said! But on the basis of thoughts, beliefs and actions, as I've said! Thanks for changing your mind!

I believe that we both understand the definition of the word Respect entirely however we both look upon it in completely opposite lights. Therefore we can not reach a mutual agreement on who should and who should not be treated with respect. I am of the opinion that all human beings have the right to be respected for who they are and the choices they make in life. This basic level of respect I feel is imoortant for everyone however if you do not agree and only categorise respect as something you can earn through great deeds and so on then I guess we are of two different minds on the subject however I am not going to change my view point.

Respect n. 1. an attitude of deference, admiration, or esteem; regard.

Okay, so you admire everybody regardless of what they do? If so you need psychiatric help.

But why? You are justifying yourself.

Do you even understand the concept of respect? I don't think you do.

I think that statement is fairly straight forward. Everyone should be respected. People do not need to earn my respect I respect them and their decisions. Apart from anything else I respect them for the mutual respect that I often find they show me. Do I do anything spectacular? No, but they respect me for who I am and what I do.

This is where you confuse the two, which is why I brought it up. Jesus, it's like talking to a chimp.

Why should you blindly give respect to everyone you meet? They haven't done anything *to* respect! My point was that you seem to think that if I don't respect somebody that means I don't like them, or hate them. Which isn't true. Because the two do not go hand in hand. I like Father Jack, but I don't respect him. I respect Benjamin Zepheniah, but I've never met him and might easily find him a tedious and annoying bloke if I did. I'd still respect him.

The thought that "deep down you should have some respect for everybody" is tosh. Respect is something you bestow on someone for their thoughts, beliefs or actions. If you completely disagree with these aspects of a particular person, regardless of whether you actually like them or not, then you shouldn't respect them. The notion that I should respect everybody merely because they are members of the same species is sentimental nonsense.

I just glanced over your response and instantly found it to be flawed. You brought the contrast between liking someone and respecting someone into this conversation not me. I never said no respect means contempt you did and you can justify it all you want but you are really just trying to justify it to yourself. I too see the difference but what I am saying is even when you despise someone to your very core you still respect them. I would never disrespect anybody I know and I feel I am a better person for that. However in the words of Voltaire "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." Have your way my mind is clear on how I should live my life.
