Well, the drug is being (or has been) downgraded to class C. What does this mean? The government are keen to point out that it is still illegal, that those in possession will still be arrested.

On the news tonight, they used the phrase "Cannabis, a drug tens of thousands of people choose to smoke each week". I think they are seriously underestimating how widespread its use is. I wager everyone on here knows somebody who smokes it, I certainly do. Could decriminalizing the drug work in this country? There are huge benefits for the government in the way that it would free up a lot of police time, which could be used for catching those dealing/possessing harder drugs.

Is there any point whatsoever in downgrading the drug as they have done?

Do you have any views on the drug, or the questions I have asked above?

Erm, well I'm guessing any person arguing against me is actually currently taking Cannabis or plans to do so.

That way I see it the law says drugs are illegal.

That means illegal for people at dinner parties. Illegal for people playing videogames. Illegal for people in clubs. Illegal for people living on the street. And so on.

And all illegal drugs are indeed illegal, including the ones middle class and upper class people happen to have taken a fancy to.

You don't get rid of the problem of those people taking these drugs regardless of the consequences by legalising it for them, and you certainly don't do it by lessening the penalty. You treat them the same as you'd treat a homeless person wandering the streets on drugs, or a person dealing drugs outside a school. In other words you treat everyone the same because that is the essence of the law.

But that is not what happens, and that is why we have a problem.

With it being the weekend before the Hutton report is delivered I kind of find it ironic that a labour person could talk about lying...when a Labour poltician has almost certainly lied before Parliament, the country, and several inquiries.

Yep, politicians lie. Always have and always will, but occasionally they get caught. With the Hutton report it is a matter of who got caught this time, but someone did.

In theory yes, in practice it rarely works for what the law deems minor offences such as Class C drugs, traffic offences, low level crime. For every one repentant person there are probably 9 more ready to do it all over again because the chance of being caught and punished is slim.

I guarantee you that if any of this lot here were to be arrested for Cannabis use they would, if it even got that far, swear blind in court they would not touch the stuff again, and be smoking it once more that very weekend.

Yet if any were to discover their houses burgled and the criminal caught, sorry, "alleged criminal", they'd want him stopping and probably in prison.

You cannot have law and order when a society decides who can break the law based on their social status.

"And thus, Yukikaze, son of Yukikale, prophesised the return of a conservative rule, and said "the grass shall be greener, and remain green, and anyone caught on that grass shall be prosecuted, for the return of the conservatives will spell prosperity on a national scale".

And the people cheered and rejoiced at these biblical promises, for they really truly honestly believed them, and there was joy in the streets. But when the time came, it was shown that the prophecy was not fulfilled, and rubbishness swept the nation. For it was evil."

Lies 4:18-21.

Yeah, the conservatives are gay.

I personally don't see anything "cool" or fun about breaking the law, but everyone makes mistakes, right?

I've had my run-ins with the police (only VERY minor stuff such as "disturbing the peace"), and the most detentions in my entire year at school, but I'm not a bad person. As far as I see it, if you commit a crime and serve your debt to society, you're back in the good books.

That's what punishments are primarily for, aren't they? Rehabilitation?

That would be producing illegal drugs or from a drugs dealer.
