Nintendo do seem to rest on their laurels after they've delievered some nice hardware though. I hope they don't just release Zelda NDS, Mario NDS, Metroid NDS, F-Zero NDS etc etc and think that's good enough...

That's because downplaying Nintendo in the industry is so common now that it's basically a normal thing to do. You say it won't have any effect on their sales - but that's because it's already happening. OK, so Nintendo aren't exactly matching its competition's marketing budget, but by just saying something as simple as "Nintendo are crap" on a forum can have a chain effect, much like word of mouth.
