I'm not sure whether they can or not. I think this article I found is quite good on the subject.

About a year ago I befriended two girls. We became really, really close friends and we did everything together. They are both still my two best friends, but since then we have a grown apart a bit as a group of three. In the summer, I fell for one of them, and at christmas she told me she was in love with me, and so we've been trying to keep our friendships going while still being madly in love with each other. And our "inseparable" group of three, is now not the same as it was before.... but we try. Any thoughts?

I'm friends with a couple of girls in the way Kat and Ginge described.

Neither are butch, but we just sort of clicked as friends.

An ugly, butch girl can be one of the lads because you don't want to sleep with them.
A fit girl cannot, because you will want to do things with her and that means she ain't "one of the lads"

A 'ladette' isn't a girl that hangs around with blokes. A ladette is a tomboy to me. A girl who generally lacks all the finesse, dignity and femininity, and is instead a loud, foul mouthed lunatic, many of which can be found on these ibiza documentaries.

I suppose it's a lot to do with alcohol massively increasing the testosterone levels though.

I have ALWAYS had more male friends than female - its just the way I am in general I find that I can get along and have fn with lads better as friends.

Looking back all of my best friends and closest friends have been male apart from the odd few and for years I never had a boyfriend because i was seen as 'one of the gang' or 'too good a friend' Which was upsetting i suppose but cool as i would often go ice skating with a group of 6 foot rugby lads being the only girl and have loadsa fun!

I still mostly hang with lads and when i not with the lads I am with my boyfriend who is my best friend.

Dont get the wrong Idea by the way I am not a hard as nails lesbian I am straight and look like a lady just click with the guys.

Although everynow and then its lovely to have some girly chats with girl friends - ya need a balance. :)
