It's that time of year for me. I have to make my course choices for my final year of high school. Before getting the sheet I'd like to makes it clear I explicitly wanted only to take Maths Int2, Media Studies Advanced Higher and Psychology Higher.

When i got it however there were a few "changes" :

> Psychology will not be taught this year as the teacher of it is off on maternity leave and will not be back in time to learn the new syllabus that the SQA are enforcing this year.

D'oh!

> Media Studies will not be taught at advanced higher as there were simply not enough funds once they had been given to the sciences.

D'oh!

I need to take a minimum of 4 subjects to stay in schooling and instead of just having to pick one I now need to try and get 3 :( The thing that REALLY annoys me though is they have dedicated an entire column to sciences to make sure that they get students. (there are only 5 columns) They are protecting the sciences from getting a low intake and letting the arts be damned. They have even put some of the sciences in two columns to further protect them. Why couldn't Media have gone there?!?! For example Physics at Higher is in Column B and C. Just not fair to the more creatively minded. My school sucks :(

No, I can appreciate things, I just thing that really as a race we don't actually know what we're talking about when we say "art".

And although it may seem like it, the irony of your post did not completely pass me by.

The conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects describes what I believe art to be.

Dictionary definition time:

The creation of works of beauty.

So it all comes down to opinion then. How nice of it.

I think art literally means the construction of something.

Therefore anything is art. I hate to defend Satchi's love affair eith 'art' though...

Art is not about expressing yourself. Art is whatever the public or some stuffy critic says is art.

In 6th year i took 2 subjects, higher biology and higher chemistry.

I had so many afternoons off that i walked home 3 days a week (4 when the chemistry homework classes werent running). It was bliss.

The whole concept of art bothers me. It's essentially a meaningless word.

It's creative and so art, because art means creation essentially.
