People may brush it to the side and dismiss it as a ridiculous topic to even discuss but it is a problem which needs to be addressed. Who is right to say that men who have made the official switch (not necessarily actually having the operation) to become a female should not be allowed to compete in Athletics events such as the Olympics? I know I wouldn't want to be the person to do this and I am sure that no one else would want this job. Cross dressers/transvestites have/should have equal opportunities in todays society and not allowing them this option is effectively denying them this right.
Thats obviously all well and good if the competitor has honestly been living as a member of the other sex for reasons other than to compete in the opposite gender catagory, but there is also the other side. The side being, how low are people prepared to go? All it would take is for a World Class Male Athlete to live as a female for two years and you would be likely to see records being broken by quite a large margin. Would someone be willing to do this? Personally I'm not sure, but lets face the facts, this person would become THE face of Womens athletics, record breakers do not go unnoticed.
Lets put it this way, for example Paula Radcliffe won the last London Marathon in the women catagory, but if she was competing against the males then there would have been several people who could have beaten her. Fair? Definately not as she's trained to become what many would say, one of the greatest female long distance runners in history.
For any doubters, the evidence that this can happen is there. There has been at least 1 high profile occurance of this in athletics, and another in tennis. Should it be allowed to happen? In my opinion, no.
So whats your view on this? Allow it? Or disallow it?
