Hi, i've been having numerous trouble's this evening attempting to get my NTL cable modem to communicate with my computer. It's using ethernet, whcih has worked fine for the past few weeks, but today it just went pearshaped.

Firstly upon plugging the cable in the back, the "Enet" light didn't come on, and i've tried switching the power off etc to it but it still failed to light up, Eventually I had to apply some pressure and push the cable down a bit till it lit up, only to come off again. I'm on the internet now only because i've had to continously apply pressure down.

I have a feeling the jack at the back of the modem is dying, I'm just wondering if it's possible to get NTL to send out a new modem or something. Has anyone done this before?

Just ring them and explain it to them. My modem died and they replaced it within 2 days.

Never email companies with problems like this, it's soooo awkward. Ringing is easier.

Ah!

Nope.

The cable modem is attached to a "Co-axil" type lead that goes into the wall.

Well ntl must use a different socket for the internet connection because the RJ45 plugs straight into the socket in my room.

Er, I think there's been some sort of misunderstanding here, Icarus :P

My 20m RJ45 ethernet cable is attached to the the LAN port at the back of my PC, and the *other* end its plugged into the ethernet port at the back of the NTL cable modem.

Hang on... the cable connected to the LAN port... is it a RJ45 cable?

Because if it is, you'll find it's the same connector type that fits direct into the BB socket.

Which I am doing now, but the other end goes into the back of the modem downstairs, which at the mo isn't happy.

I'll probably by a cheap network card or something and have ICS in my house.

Oh, that's what I'm talking about. I thought you didn't have one installed... but if your mobo already has on-board ethernet, then you can just use that.

Hmmmm.

So getting an ethernet card would be a better idea then using the LAN jack at the back of my computer?

I think it'sjust the equivalent of an internal modem.
