Yes, a lot of people would dis-agree with me, and say that you need good graphics or a story behind the main characters, but these are the things that i disagree with.
The games don't need to have good graphics to be a good game, because without a good storyline the game would be nothing, it would be boring.
OK, i admit that i do make comments on a game's graphics, saying whether they are good or not, but that doesn't stop me liking the game, if it has a good, strong storyline i will play it and most probably enyjoy it.
This reminds me of FFVII, poor graphics but a strong storyline behind it, and the background story also helps in making a good game because it can help you realise why they are getting involved in everything bad that is happening.
In RPG's like the Final Fantasy series there is always a twist in the Story which makes the game that bit more exciting, because if it was the same thing all the way through the game you would get bored.
You usually learn different things about the characters throughout the game, like with all the characters from FFIX you learn about their lives all the way through their journey up until disc 4, actually until the end of the game, and that is what makes it a good game because if you learnt everything from the beginning, no matter how good the graphics are the game would simply get repetative and boring.
The designers of games like these don't want you to get bored half way through the game or even the beginning so they concentrate more on the Story than on how good the graphics of the game are.
Squaresoft know exactly how to make a good game that RPG fans (like myself) can enjoy and thats why they are so successful.
