It’s an examination of what we could possibly go through before death.
Similar to an old Twilight Zone short, in which a civil war soldier is hung. The rope breaks, he runs away, meets a girl, sleeps with girl, then realised all that’s happened is instantaneous at his moment of death, and he finds himself dead at the end of the rope.
Think “Jabobs Ladder”, abet in a slightly different way, but in JL he was coming to terms with his demons, and spending his time in purgatory.
