In modern day society some people place a lot of stock on peoples appearance. However to contrast that there are many people who believe that it is the personality inside that really counts. I myself like to think that it is the personality that counts however I have been known to be vain, patronising, shallow and down right stupid. This, I gather means that my personality is not desirable. If I was better looking though would that compensate for that? Could I count on the shallowness of other people to make friends and generally be popular?

Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Colin Farrell and Keanu Reeves. How many guys here would KILL to have their looks, their talents and their personality? I know I would love to be just like them. However making idols out of celebrities is arguably one of the shallowest things you can do. It is however undeniable that the before mentioned celebs have girls (and some guys) falling over themselves to catch a glimpse of them. Looks can change everything in your world but is this a strength of society? Is it a good thing that anyone can live a rich and full life despite their qualifications and so on, or is this a horrible failing in which many hard working and educated people get overlooked?

On the other side of the coin many people make livings simply by voicing their thoughts and feelings. However it's not as common. Most people who have a good personality are those who work regular jobs with the rest of us but don't have Halle Berry for a girl friend. In my opinion many celebrities would do well to have a "normal" boyfriend. Is the reason that celebrity marriages rarely last because you can't have the looks and the personality?

I don't know the answers to any of these questions but what I do know is we are living in a very materialistic age in which big boys want their big toys and big girls want their big jewels. If we each like our pretty things are we all looking for a pretty partner and personality can be damned? I want to believe that a personality counts but I just don't know.

As with everything else, the answer is not always black and white. There are different states of 'looking good'. Many people just don't make the effort, they make look ok, but perhaps they don't use deodorant, don't comb their hair, don't look after themselves in some way that makes a difference.

This is what I've noticed, even just walking down the high-street. There are people that, while not what I would call good looking, would look so much better if they took more care of themselves. Men and women. I'm not talking about designer clothes either, just generally smartening themselves up a bit.

Both

Appearance to get attention and then what's inside counts more as time progresses.

Harsh but true and same for everybody I'm afraid.

Now there's an interesting concept. Don't you find yourself judging people's personality simply based on their looks?

Has anyone ever read 'The portrait of Dorian Gray'? If not, it's definitely worth a look. It explores that thought a little further.. it's an interesting read, to say the least. I won't say more for fear of spoiling the suprise.

It's scientifically proven that investing in good clothes has the following effect:

x = y/z - t

where x is the number of women you sleep with in any given year, y is the amount you spend on clothes in a given year, z being the number of items that money buys you and t is how much you talk about video games.

Depends on what you're after.

A quick shag? Then looks all the way, who gives a crap if she's thick as two short planks. Or even two thick planks...

Long relationship? Then you want someone you can talk to. Me and m missus still chat on the phone for at least half an hour every night, and we've been going out nearly 18 months. She's bloody good looking as well, mind. But then I would say that, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that...
