personally i dont think max payne was that gruesome.

i say manhunt.

its not exactly the best tagline.

your probably expecting an insult from me for calling me gay, but im just gonna tell you why i have him as my tagline, its cos i have'nt been on the chat for 2 weeks.

i personally think they're not scary cos i've completed them all,(yes, that includes manhunt)but i've got to admit, resi evil made me twitch a bit.
if i really had to choose one i would choose manhunt because i just completed it yesterday and its got a great storyline.

I would think it would be Manhunt.

Perhaps the so called "Gruesome" games nowadays arent so gruesome because we have all grown up with them, its became part of our lives and its nothing unusual to see, whereas years ago, this would've came as a shock (hence mortal kombat bringing in a new era of unseen violence) and would be considered as "Scary and gruesome"

tenchu was pretty sick, although the world had become desensitized to violence by then.

sneaking up behind some guy and slitting his throat - if that had been released 5 years before it'd be banned I reckon.

Most gruesome game ever, or just the most gruesome for it's time?

The latter title would have to go to Mortal Kombat, after it's release caused mass media hysteria on an unprecedented level. Carmageddon was bad, but MK was much more explicit.

Most gruesome ever? I'm not sure. Perhaps that 3D0 murder mystery game (or was it on the jaguar?) which included photo scenes of such things as a dismbodied skull & spinal cord. Don't remember the name of it now though.
