It always annoys me when I am talking about my PlayStation 2, and then somebody interferes saying bluntly that they are complete garbage. Not only is this far from the truth, but it is also unjust to the PS2. It is still only a baby in terms of console life. Look at the PSone, when it first came out most of the game on it were below standard, despite the fact that they were cutting edge technology wise. And then look at the games on it now, such as Final Fantasy 9, C-12 to name but a few. The console has matured into one sweet machine, and it's no surprise that millions of people around the world have one. And it's still showing no signs of dying down yet, due to the recent release of the accompanying LCD screen, as well as the afore mentioned games.

The PS2 can only get better. It is telling exactly the same story as the PSone, in that most of it's games at the moment could be a lot better, even though they are at the pinnacle of gaming- "cough cough Ridge Racer". It will take time for developers to get to know the intricacies of Sony's latest baby, and when they finally unleash some of the PS2's real power, the results will be oh so sweet. And the good news is that it doesn't seem to be too far away on the horizon. Because thanks to Hideo Kojima, the PS2 is going to make a name for it's self even more so, when Metal Gear Solid 2: Son's of Liberty is released later in the year.

Sure, there will be others, such as Gran Turismo 3 etc, but only when MGS2 is released will we have a good idea of what the PS2 is capable of. And thank god it looks good already. Because in my opinion, if MGS2 was to flop, then it could spell an early demise for the PS2. MGS is probably the best game on the PlayStation, apart from possible the Final Fantasy series, and look what it did to that. What I am trying to say is that because of the huge hype behind Konami's master piece, failure could be disastrous. But like I said, that is very unlikely, and in fact, MGS2 is going to make the PS2 BIG. It will be the first big selling game for the PS2, and will probably increase sales 10 fold. By then anybody will be able to buy the console, and with such games on the horizen, the future is looking very good for the little "black box".

This time that the PS2 has now is very important. Because aside from the dying Dreamcast, there is no competition apart from the PSone. Sony have the next generation console market to themselves, and they MUST make the best of it. Because otherwise they could lose their head start to Bill Gates and Nintendo. It's not very likely to be honest, but more surprising things have happened in the past (West Ham beating Man Utd at Old Trafford). It is imperative to bring out the big games sooner rather than later, because if they wait too long, then the impatient people may just switch to the cheaper Game Cube, or the more powerful X-Box. I have no doubt that it will be a tough period for PS2 next year, especially at Christmas, but I believe in them, and hope that they pull through. The console hasn't been so intense since the days of the SNES and Megadrive, but next year when all three machines are out of the starting blocks, the best one will prevail. And I think that Christmas 2002 will show us who the winner is.

By then, the experience developers will have with the PS2 should be at a great level. It would have been two years since the machine was released, and just thinking about the games that will be out by then just makes me wish we were there now. Graphics will be second to none, game play will be top notch, and the only thing I can see holding back all the consoles is the fact that they might just release sequel after sequel. But thankfully, I don't think this will be the case, and new games will new innovative ideas will be unleashed.

So all I can say to those people who diss the PS2, "Why don't you play it properly? Get a good game (ISS, TimeSplitters) and PLAY it. You will be amazed. And then just wait a little while longer and you will TRULY be amazed."

The third place is nearing closer as I am writing this, and despite the competition, I can honestly say that now is a great time to be a games fan.

Have Microsoft said they won't be developing for the XBox? If so, that's something I've missed.

Let's face it, neither Microsoft or Sony have got any great history for game development. As far as Microsoft are concerned, for years it was pretty much MS Flight Simulator. Though to give them credit, they have got a lot better (Midtown Madness being a particular favourite). Sony are improving mainly by buying up various companies (such as Psygnosis). On the whole, both depend on quality titles from third parties.

Did we?

I didn't - I'm loving every minute of it.

You may as well say that everything you buy is a waste of money, because it will all be replaced at some point.

Following your logic, I can tell you that you'll be wasting your money on an Xbox because the PS3 will be better!

e-jazz you are forgeting one thing.
Its not Microsoft who will be creating games for the X-box. So you cannot say lets see who creates the best games sony or Microsoft because obviously the answer would be Microsoft if that was the case though.
But it isn't.
Konami, creators of MGS2, have created a good looking game for the PS2 probably the most excellent game that is ever going to be seen on PS2 so if game designers such as Konami can do that for the PS2 then its obvious they can do it for the X-BOX but even better in graphics wise and in gameplay.
Good that ur getting the X-BOX but when it comes out you will be leaving your PS2 and focusing on the X-box.

If you ask me made a mistake buying the PS2!

People who are reading this and got a PS2 are think "well thats where ur wrong because Metal Gear Solid 2 is on PS2".

So what if MGS2 is on the PS2!

Im quite patient and so I can wait for a game like that to come out on X-box and I believe there will be many games like that on the X-box and you people who have got the PS2 would know you made a mistake.

Those who are getting the X-box even though you waisted your money on the PS2 at least your going to have an X-box.

My advise is cherish your PS2 before X-box comes out,you still have quite a bit of time left so enjoy it while you can!

I wasn't cussing the X-Box, I myself am thinking of getting one. I was just trying to point out that just good graphics does not make a good game. We will just have to see who will bring out the better games Sony or Microsoft!

Saesee good games will be on the PS2 but think about when the X-BOX LAUNCH A LOAD OF GOOD GAMES THEN you will forget about your PS2 and you will focus on the X-box all the time so if you ask me I think you just wasted your money!

Saesee stop trying to defend your crappy PS2 even if an upgraded emotion engine comes out it still won't be better than the X-Box.

Graphics are important to most gamers you might think it is not but it is!
Gameplay and story lines is important for all games.
If you combine these three together what do you have?

Answer: Perfect Games

With the X-box makes it possible.

So im sorry to say mate! You have bought the wrong console bad luck! ITS GAME OVER FOR YOU!!!!

I mean - just think!

It is Christmas 2001, and you want a console. You take a look at the brand new X-Box that has just launched THEN you see a £250 PlayStation 2 (with perhaps an upgraded emotion-engine) with the brand-new Metal Gear Solid 2 game resting on the shelves with a whole lotta other great games!
