Right.

Basically, I'm 18, and I'm looking for one of these for ease of conveniece; making paying large amounts of money for things like petrol and that, on a regular basis, a lot simpler and hassle-free (I hate the thought of being seen, alone, with £50-odd in my back-pocket!).

I currently have a Current Account with Nationwide. But, after applying for a Credit/Debit card with them I found that I do not meet their "standards" set on only my part-time wages.
I do plan on working more 'full-time' sometime next year, but I really don't want to wait that long; for conveniece's sake.

So, if anyone has been in a similar situation to me; or if you know of any banks that might be able to give me what I want, I'd be grateful if you could give me some advice and help.

At the moment, I'm thinking of going with First Direct, since my mum reckons she can persuade them to take me. But what do you think?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

HSBC, eh? What do you need to get a Debit card with them then?

And I'm not bothered about it being a combination of the two or not. Infact, I always thought the `/´ [no, that's not a Japanese man with a big nose!] indicated "Credit OR Debit"... :)

And I'd rather have a Debit than a Credit one, I suppose...
But what exactly are the differences between the 3?

I've been with Alliance & Leicester for about 12 years and they're superb.

Indeed. Although HSBC themselves are incompetent muppets, just don't ask them to do anything clever and you'll never have any problems.

And wisely so.

I mock people with credit card debts exceeding £5,000 or with numerous loans taken out to pay for luxuries like cars or leather sofas, and more than anything else, I mock homeowners.

£250,000 just to call some bricks and mortar "your own"?

Debit cards are handy - I have a Delta card that I use as often as possible. I have a credit card with a cracking limit of £3500 (!) but never use it.

Don't see what's wrong with a standard debit card myself. Just get a switch card or equivalent. I'm 25 and I still live by it. Oh I have a credit card too, with the awesome limit of £200. Combi credit/debit cards are becoming less and less clever, as Switch is becoming more widely accepted.
