The original 5 were great, but really, it's gone down hill from there. Notability isn't a standard any more, it's a leaderboard. All these new notables are bringing the side down.
Maybe if you voted for people who are actually notable and not treat it like the popularity contest that it has turned in to?

If bringing people to the website is the main reason I'd be curious to know if they have figures showing if this is working or not.
Ideally we could do with a pre-election ballot and then we get to vote for only the two or three top contenders. Although that would definitely turn into a popularity contest with users from different forums going for the people they know. So it becomes a no win situation.
Already Virtuoso has done a Goatboy on us - he has no idea who Black Glove is.
I read in one of the threads that these used to be every 6 months, maybe it is time to go back to that system. These elections have definitely lost something as even Mr Snuggly 'forgot' to open the voting thread.

Nothing wrong with that though. It DOES make the world go round you know...
I think SR's ,main target in holding notable elections is to bring more people to the website. Hence a secret ballot isn't going to acomplish their goal. It's easy to forget that SR is a commercial venture, and in the end all their decisions come down to money.

It's a good idea in theory but you can guarantee that someone will start a thread saying 'I voted for so-and-so, who did you vote for?' which would negate the secrecy to a certain degree.
