The make-up was good, brilliant by 1982 standards, and personally i think it beats Alien by a long shot.
Also lots of fire, lots and lots of fire.
Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China in the 70s and 80's and all excellent stuff. Then we have a small amount of tosh in the last 10 or so years.
One of the first horror films I ever saw.

The Thing relies more heavily on gore.
Alien is still superior though.
