I read that in the Gangs of New York book by Herbert Asbury (same time period) it said something about the ripper alledgedly being from New York but it is all just rumours.
I thought the ripper moved to America after he had finished his killings? It was on the history channel a while ago, he had a funny name and came over from America and then moved back.

I think that the Ripper is long dead, and hence it isn't really that important.

If you read that link I put down, you'll see that "many professional historians" have believed a number of different suspects, and still do.

Many professional historians and researchers beleive it was the cheif physician to the monarch at the time who also had freemason links.
It was almost certainly him as the evidence backs him much more than "john the butcher".
