Is it true that if a tyre on your car bursts/pops/goes bang etc.. and you hit the brakes, then it'll go flying into the air?

Well, maybe not 'flying in the air', but flip over.

I've got a program which helps you with driving lessons, theory test and the rest, and I'm sure I remember seeing a question about it and telling you to brake gently and pull over to the side of the road.

Been getting a lot of scary stories from people, seriously putting me off driving.

"NO!! NO NO! NEVER hit the brakes hard if your tyre bursts or your car will flip over!! NOOO!"

In the middle of overtaking on the M80 I had a blowout. Was rather boring actually, I just pulled over and tried to change the tyre. Until I discovered that the wheel had jammed on to the axle. It took an AA guy with a sledgehammer to get the wheel off.

I lost a tyre once, doing about 60mph - not as exciting as Goatboy's experience but it was a shock all the same. I could still walk at the time and so I walked about a mile to my mate's house. When they drove me back to my car to change my tyre I noticed a 'phone box 50 yards the other way! I was so tired I could barely walk for two days afterwards.

I bought my first mobile 'phone about a week later ...

It's tough love.
