Im talking about great people here everybody, not the tweenies cos there furry or anything like that...

Mine would me

Nelson Mandela - His beliefs and how he stood up for them
Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) - He wasn't afraid to be himself
Che Guevara - He was an inspiring revolutionary
Tony Hawk - Hes got guts and is all about youth and risk

All these men are/were GREAT in many peoples opinions.

They stand for what I stand for.

I respect them.

Ghandi: For achieving his aims without resorting to violence, showing his form of peaceful protest works.

George Orwell: For figuring it all out and being able to tell it to us through analogies, and being so far ahead of his time it's untrue.

Michael Moore and others like him: For exposing the hypocrisy that exists at the highest levels, and not shutting up when he's wanted to.

Bill Gates: He took his dream and ran with it, never gave up and eventually succeeded. For that a I salute him.

Karl Marx: Because he showed that religion is not only unnecessary, but harmful.

Charles Darwin: For writing his book and having the gall to release it, even though it took him a few decades. Also for being slightly mental.

Bill Hicks: For telling the truth as he saw it, and encouraging people to think for themselves rather than accepting the b******t we're fed every day

Chris Morris: For showing daring, creativity, originality, and a total lack of respect for reputations throughout his career thus far.

Tiberius: For overcoming perhaps the worst upbringing in history, surviving, and running the Roman Empire (that he didn't even want) for a couple of decades

George Monbiot: For being a genuine crusador for social justice the world over.

Socrates: For being the first man to be interesting in the idea's generated by debate, and not simply using mindless sophistry to try and avoid defeat.

Machiavelli: For telling it like it is, not how we might like it to be.

Oskar Schindler: And others like him who risked so much to help the Jews during the holocaust

Simon Weisenthal: For being a ceaseless hunter of fascist slime.

And finally...

Any Neo-Conservative: For actually being able to swallow all that fetid manure about Dubya written by his apologists with nary so much as a squeak of protest from their brains, and certainly without even a cursory effort to check the actual facts behind what has driven this 'great leader' on.

I have few idols as I am not much of a trend follower so it isnt anyone in fashion or movies or anything that I respect. To me that is all fake and phoney and nothing more than momentary entertainment.

Mark Lamaar is something of an idol to me. He is a brilliant writer as well as being one of the funniest and sharpest comedians there is. A nice guy to boot.

Lord Byron, a brilliant and inspirational poet and stud from times gone by. He hit women though so he isnt quite so good. Reminds me of me though, what a bloke.

Black Glove, a writer who has exceptional talent and will be famous as soon as some fat cat producer gets his greasy mits on him. I salute you.

Goatboy, a guy who's conquests, both sexual and otherwise, are inspirational to all of us and whos dry sense of humour gains all the respect I have to give.

I respect myself, and I respect those who treat other living things with the dignity they deserve.

Maybe he did miss an opportunity, such a policy change would have been admirable but whether the new enemy would have respected it and how other powers would have interpreted it casts doubt on whether it would be effective. I can't help thinking that an approach like you describe would be 1939 all over again. Still we'll never know and there's still time yet, after all no one can truly say what the impact of actions and events were until decades after they were taken or happened.

So true, words should be everyone's idol. Over the years some truly enlightening things have been said around the world but people have been deaf to them. However my favourite quote has never changed -

"The Only Thing Needed For Evil To Triumph Is For Good Men To Do Nothing"

I don't even know who said those words but it doesn't matter because it is the words that inspire us.

I agree with you Cubist. As much as I try to be 'my own thinker', it's hard, so sometimes I look up to people to try and provide a kind of 'path' for my thoughts. I have idols, but not for their looks, nor because of how thin they are. That's just silly. I've admired Meryl Streep for some time, purely because of the stuff that comes out of her mouth. I remember watching her on the Perfomance channel. Some of the things she said were very inspiring. Simple things are the best.

Words are my idol!
