Consoles have been in many shapes and sizes but the best shape for a console today has to be Nintendo 64. They havnt just made a box with just plain corners which are idintical to a cardboard box, they had rounded edges and looked the biz.
Nintendo's next console - Gamecube is a bit too basic dont you think? Its just... well... a cube! Come on nintendo. Do a fancy shape next time!

Sony and sega are a bit on the boring side. They just do box shaped consoles.
Microsoft should have kept to making their console in the shape of a X. At least it would have been something new, but now it looks like a Sega Saturn.

But what did happen to Sega Saturn? Did it dissapear along with its bad looking controller?

You may all say the shape doesnt matter but it does. You still have to put it somewhere so you can play it. You still have to look at it and if it is not very pleasing it may give you the impression that the games look too boring.

Will sony start to make better looking consoles? Will Microsoft change their console shape to look more like an X? Will nintendo Try to make more good shaped consoles, not just a cube? We may only find out next year...

Edgy said,
"What about the Gameboy?

It was basically a grey brick but since it's release in '89 it's been the most popular console of all time!"

This might have a lot to do with the fact that it's been available for a dozen years and at a fairly low price.

"It wasn't the fact that it was a handheld that did it, not the fact that it felt bulky and heavy but the fact that the games were good! In fact people thought they were better than the Gamegear's games which were easier to see and play!"

This is true, though I think there are many reasons why GameBoy has survived this long and sold so well. One, if I may hazard to say it, is Pokemon; I couldn't believe how GameBoy suddenly became the hottest selling thing around once those things came out.

"So the look of a console doesn't entirely matter. I think the fact that the Gamecube is small is a good thing because if you take it to a friends house it's easy to carry, it can fit in small places and therefore give you more room to put stuff."

That depends on what you mean by 'small.' Vertically, it's bigger than the other systems.

"The Playstation 2 was Sony's attempt to be too clever! It has style but not in a good way! It may go nicely with a few Stephen King novels on a bookshelf or maybe as a tray to eat food off but it just doesn't look like a games console to me!"

Then again, from your comments, neither did the GameBoy.

"I haven't actually seen a picture of the X-box since it's X-shaped design so I can't comment on that, however the X-shape did look cool! It may not have been practical but it would have stood out from all the other consoles!"

From what I've seen, it's pretty much the same as the average console; the X is just visible along its top now.

"The Playstation's original design fitted nicely underneath a SNES as it was intended originally."

You had your SNES sitting on top of it? How on earth did you get the games in?

"The only reason I buy a console is for it's games and I'm sure that's what most people do (other than the Japs who bought it as a DVD player)."

Whoa, whoa, are you kidding me? I sincerely doubt Sony added the DVD capabilities of the PS2 for the Japanese. I think there's some confusion here, in terms of culture. The Japanese take videogames more seriously than any other group on the planet. Frankly I think this would be more an incentive for Westerners, who consider films more important than games.

"I don't care about net functions either, I think they spoil a game!"

I don't see how Half-Life is harmed by allowing for multiplayer gaming over the net. In fact, it's hard for me to imagine the game without it. If I could, I'd make nearly every game have the option for online play; it adds a vast amount to the replay value.

The Playstation's original design fitted nicely underneath a SNES as it was intended originally. It used the ext. port that all Nintendo's cosoles have had so far. It looked basically like a SNES on a SNES. It would have been a lil too bulky for my liking.

The dreamcast was white, not grey or black but White! White is a good colour because it can go with any other colour and is stylish! The games on it are good too which is a good balance, I don't like it's controllers though.

In my opinion the look of a console is important but not as good as the quality of the console, it's controllers and games! the only reason I buy a console is for it's games and I'm sure that's what most people do (other than the Japs who bought it as a DVD player). I don't care about net functions either, I think they spoil a game!

I'd wager what we've seen thus far of their consoles is pretty much how they're going to look. I doubt Nintendo or Microsoft is going to switch the console shape around in any major way at this point. Mostly because it would mean delays of release, which (as I'm sure you know) gamers detest at this point.

Overall, I think I like the PS2 the best; it has great style, even if the machine inside isn't going to be up-to-par come this November. As for the Gamecube: I'm not sure if I dislike it really, though it's becoming an acquired taste the more I look into it. At first, yes, I did wonder why Shigeru's four-year-old neighbor was helping with its design. But it's growing on me.

The X-Box: Well...um...black is cool? Basically looks like many consoles, just black and with the X-Box logo on it, which is (I must admit) sort of neat. Still not going to buy one, but it's not bad looking.
