Consoles have been in many shapes and sizes but the best shape for a console today has to be Nintendo 64. They havnt just made a box with just plain corners which are idintical to a cardboard box, they had rounded edges and looked the biz.
Nintendo's next console - Gamecube is a bit too basic dont you think? Its just... well... a cube! Come on nintendo. Do a fancy shape next time!

Sony and sega are a bit on the boring side. They just do box shaped consoles.
Microsoft should have kept to making their console in the shape of a X. At least it would have been something new, but now it looks like a Sega Saturn.

But what did happen to Sega Saturn? Did it dissapear along with its bad looking controller?

You may all say the shape doesnt matter but it does. You still have to put it somewhere so you can play it. You still have to look at it and if it is not very pleasing it may give you the impression that the games look too boring.

Will sony start to make better looking consoles? Will Microsoft change their console shape to look more like an X? Will nintendo Try to make more good shaped consoles, not just a cube? We may only find out next year...

Edgy: "Pokémon (although invented in 1982-before GB) was only released recently (when compared to the likes of Super Mario Land and Tetris)."

I said it was a part of its longevity, not the only one. I'd say it mostly lasted as long as it did and sold as well, because it didn't have much in the way of competition. It kept besting other handhelds, for one reason or another, and they'd disappear of the map. If there isn't a war, technological evolution is slow.

"It still has a smaller surface area. "

True, but I didn't argue that: I said it was vertically taller than the others, which it is. Fitting one of the others atop your VCR in your entertainment center would likely be far easier, since the Gamecube won't fit in any vertically small spaces.

"The Gameboy (like many of Nintendo's older consoles) wasn't designed for it's looks."

I'd argue the same about more modern ones actually. I'd say a console's look isn't nearly as high on the priority list as many other things.

"In surveys that I've seen on the web (when PS2 was released in Jap.) most people said they bought it for the DVD."

Color me shocked: They've always had the more hardcore gaming perspective.

"I prefer my gaming to run at optimum levels and game developers tend to create games which need high specifications just so that they can run over the net. My PC can't handle many of these games."

This isn't a very good criticism of online gaming though. Most anyone who's ever tried online gaming would likely agree that online gaming is where the future is; it simply opens up too many options to ignore.

You must have a one-of-a-kind N64 to have a grey one!

The original N64's were black!

I don't like the look of the GC compered to the N64, I mean the Gamecube is a block, my 10 year old brother could incorporate a couple into building a new block tower...it really does look like a childs building block, and an expensive one at that!

I prefer the N64, shape wise anyway, I love the curve on the top and the way it sloped backwards, but those days have gone and now with the Gamecube you have to put the disc practically into the middle of the console, it is really deep down and there are about 4 levels until the dics rests on the pin, or whatever it is.

Anyhoo, it wass the 64 for me

The Game

Oh...by the way, I won Pokémon Snap for Ł12.00 in an auction..:P I'll review it AGAIN later! :D

Pokémon (although invented in 1982-before GB) was only released recently (when compared to the likes of Super Mario Land and Tetris)

That depends on

It still has a smaller surface area.

Then again, from your comments, neither did the

The Gameboy (like many of Nintendo's older consoles) wasn't designed for it's looks.

You had your SNES sitting on top of it? How on

I didn't have an original Playstation (no one other than Nintendo have) but I've seen pictures of it. I'll try to find one for you to see....

I prefer my gaming to run at optimum levels and game developers tend to create games which need high specifications just so that they can run over the net. My PC can't handle many of these games.

The PS2 on its side I think makes it look like a mid 90's PC... when tower cases where trenydy and people btought these holders to allow them to stick their desktop cases on their sides...?

Sorry... dont mean to be too offensive to PS2 owners... honest! :)

The GameCube looks by far the best the PS2 a vertical box thingy that stands on it's side, the DC a chunky looking console and the X-Box having to have a giant X on top of the box! you think the GC looks childish and rubbish? Well look at it now and you'll understand it's cool and really nice.

I quite like the cube shape...

Thge PS2 is little more than a large rectangle...

And I've been lead to believe than the GCis quite small, which I think will look pretty good once its been released...

Having missed the Dreamcast/PS2 gen consoles... Its recently taken over the X-Box for 'my console I'm gonna get' :)
