In my opinion, the simpsons is the best thing on TV at the moment and has been for the last couple years. I have seen nearly all the episodes and even if I had seen one five times, I would still find it funny. Not many programs can do that can they?
All age groups find it funny and enjoy watching it aswell, when I watch, my mom and dad watch it aswell and they, my dad especially, has really bad taste in programs.
When Matt Groening created all the characters, all the ingridients were there for a great show but no one could have predicted how fantastic it is. Another thing that is interesting is that over the many years of talking about it to friends, I have never come accross someone who dislikes the program.
Funny elements that make the program what it is
The characters are fantastic, I mean how funny is Homer when he cries over spilt beer or Mr Burns giving someone a verbal rocket. There is a character in this program that anyone can relate to, ANYONE.
The storylines, there are two that stick in my mind especially and always will, the one where Homer has to gain weight so he can become disabled and the one where George Bush moves in accross the road. The George Bush episode is probably the best episode ever!
Other little extras make the program what it is, things like when they mimic something out of a film ie. When Homer be friends Flanders and Ned tries to drive off and Homer clutches on to the back of the car like the T1000 in terminator 2. That scene was fantastic.
I would just like to add that my favourite characters (apart from the obvious homer and bart) are:-
Mojo the monkey - only features once but he was outstanding, especially his "happy dance" :D
Comic Book Guy - The ruler of sarcasm, his one liners crack me up every time
Mr Burns - His thriftiness and his dislike for fellow people with funny results make him a good character
George Bush - not him personally but he was involved in the epic battle against Homer
There are just a few of my favourites, the list could go on for ages though :).
Concluding this little essay on why the simpsons is so great, I would just like to say, The Simpsons is great!
Atomic_Koala
The only episode that really shocked me was the episode where Homer kidnaps Burns son.
Bart: Go on Dad you can do it! (escape from the film theatre!)
Homer Bursts Out, and gets shot to death by the police!
Then you find out Homer is still alive and it was just a simulation...and now heres what it would look like if Homer Simpson was killed with a barage of Baseballs!
Classique!
How about the one where a new girl joins Lisa's class and Ralph wins the diarama contest with his collection of Star Wars figures!
Features the classic Ralph line "My cats breath smells of cats food."
Then there are the Treehouse of Horror Hallowe'en specials....
Lenny: "Did you hear something?"
Karl: "No."
Lenny:"Did I?"
Karl: (snapping) "I don't know."
"Don't worry kids, your parents are gonna be just fine. Alright people, put on your corpsing gloves, we've got two frozen bodies out there..."
Great, especially the fight Homer and Burnsy have in the cabin at the end.

They do, do spot on film paradies! :)
I dont think I've got a fave episode...
There have been a few episodes with gags that have had me laughing so hard that milk was running from my nose! :) ... However they not always the best all round episodes... just the best moments...
Although the Ralf Wiggam, and the Lepricorn on his shoulder telling him to set fire to things was good :)
Or
When the Lemon tree gets stolen by kids from Shelbyville.
Or
When the Simpsons have to relocate because Sideshow Bob tries to Kill Bart, and change there name to the Thompsons, live on a boat based after Cape Fear!!
Or.... There are so many excellent episodes but these are some of my personal favourites!!
My favourite characters have to be Mr Burns, Homer, Groundskeeper Willie and Lenny!!
My favourite characters include Homer, Apu, Lionel huts, Dr Nick... Actually I like them all.
That scene where Apus 2 year old son pulls out a Shotgun in the Kwick E Mart and says
"Oh, how I have waited for this day!" is just hillarious!
The one where Homer meets Herb Powell is alright, its about 7 years old now tho :|
Bad news that you probably dont want to hear is the bloke who does Lionel Hutz's voice was killed recently, how? im not sure but he also does the voice for Truy Mclure.
One of my favourite characters that i forgot to mention is Moe, Moe rulez
