I'm setting up a bank account in the near future because I need one to transfer my cash into when I get my new job. I have made do with a building society up until now and so havent had a bank account before.

A few of my mates reckon Halifax is the best bank account but I arent too big on all that 0% interest do-dah rubbish. It confuses me. I just want a decent bank account that is easy to use.

I have heard that for student bank account you can get vouchers off HMV and stuff when you join but it could be folklore.

Suggestions or advice wanted please.

Thanks.

Is Intellegent Finance just online banking?

My mate recommended Abbey National, I get a Visa Electron card and you can top up your mobile phone from cash machines. Cool eh?

Intelligent Finance is very good.

With their basic Current Account you get high interest, can check your balance online (for free) at any time, and can speak to the nice scottish ladies on the phone 24/7.

With any 'student account' which is what I would be getting, I get offered all this extra crap such as overdrafts and insurance which I dont want.

None of the leaflets mention of I get a cheque book and a debit card - thats all I really want! I want a Solo or Switch card and I think they are offered by most places so I will just ask about.

Halifax seems to be ok and abbey national looks quite decent too.

You should be able to use a debit card. Mine is from the Alliance + Leicester and it's a Delta card which, to all intents and purposes, acts just like a Visa card.

I'm with Nationwide (but that's a building society, so pfft...) AND Natwest.

Natwest are great as they give you a Solo card (assuming you're older then 11 :cD) which you can use on PayPal/eBay and in shops. Oh, and most websites take it too.

I get 6% interest in my building society until I am 18 so I will keep most of my cash there, I need a bank account for cash transfers and ordering stuff on the internet.

Can I order with a regular debit card or does it have to be a credit card?

High interest rate is good.

I have HSBC and at 2.3%, it's kinda crap :-/

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Second to none...
So far the services you provide are second to none. Keep up the good work.
