I'm setting up a bank account in the near future because I need one to transfer my cash into when I get my new job. I have made do with a building society up until now and so havent had a bank account before.

A few of my mates reckon Halifax is the best bank account but I arent too big on all that 0% interest do-dah rubbish. It confuses me. I just want a decent bank account that is easy to use.

I have heard that for student bank account you can get vouchers off HMV and stuff when you join but it could be folklore.

Suggestions or advice wanted please.

Thanks.

Visa Electron is almost useless. I got one with an Abbey National account and I'd say only 15% of places (at most) accept it. Nothing to do with the size of the retailers or anything either, just doesn't seem to be a very well supported system. Solo/regular Visa/almost anything else is far more handy.

Is it a normal bank account you want, or a student one ?

Barclays, used them since A Level and they're great - no hassle overdraft, got free HMV vouchers at the start, no comission foreign money and free exchange of what's left, great online backing 24/7, automatice cheque clearance...plus I've got a Barclaycard as well, again with free vouchers, online site e.t.c.

Be that in Scotland?

For the accent of the ladies (could even be the same one I've spoken to each time) is clearly Scottish.
