2000 was a terrible year. To begin, many big names dropped out. First was SNK, creators of the NeoGeoPocketColour and great games like metal slug. Despite these games, people shunned the NGPC, and SNK were forced into retreat back to Japan.
Then Sega. After having made the best games for years (Shenmue, Jet Set, Crazy Taxi etc) their ecconomics went head first, and ended in the company being split up- inevitably a ploy towards becoming 3rd party only.
Furthermore, with the decline of the N64 (ok, there were great games... but not many!), and even the PSX as gamers waited for the PS2, what did we get? Poor, rushed games on a system that had even more bugs than Windows. Now playststion fans may complaim, but when you compare this to Sega's DC launch where the games were excellent, and the only problem was the slow internet connection at first, this was a dissaster!
Finally, gamers were told they had to wait until Winter for the first truelly triple A title on the PS2- The bouncer. And that is poosibly the poorest game ever.
On another note, many publishers saw a fall in revenue as gamers waited for the new consoles, and as a results have held their best games for this year!

That kind of sums up my answer to this topic. Yes, it's important to look back on a year and sum up the games that arrived on our systems (and courtesy of SR, on our doorsteps) but most years start with a drought in January (bar those late christmas releases that got pushed back too far) have a few classics in the middle of the year, sometimes following a big publicity campaign and sometimes from Sega, and then you gear up for all the big christmas releases that are as guaranteed to appear as an avalanche on a ski slope after someone shouts 'Avalanche? DON'T BE SILLY!!'
I can't think of a year in the past decade where no classic games have appeared at some point, although again this usually happens nearer christmas. But the main thing to remember is that you don't just play the new games, there are plenty of classics from past years waiting to be bought or played again. So if you're feeling down from the lack of releases this year, why not dust off an older game and give it a new lease of life. Try it, you might like it!
200 was kinda an odd year for the PC... some people seem to think it was a great year... others that it was terrible...
I was happy with Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask and No Mercy (I managed to survive with just 3 games!)
What's more, for the first time in my life I WON 2 games thanks to the nice people over here.
Oh, and I got Pokemon Gold on import which was nice too!
Finally, the death of the Dreamcast was great!
I'll now be able to buy Sega's first class Hardware and Software for incredibly low prices as the dim-witted public thinks that it's useless!

Ok, So the SP2 didn't have bugs.. I meant a buggy launch (crushes in Paris etc)!
