Hey everyone I was just wondering if anybody has some useful tips and/or hints to getting good work experience for a career in presenting (hopefully radio in my case). I am already getting work experience with my local station Forth One www.forthone.co.uk but I need MORE :D I am going to try and get a job presenting hospital radio too in a couple of months which should look good on my CV. Anyway any useful info would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. My mate said something about a radio station that allows anyone to broadcast on it from their home aslong as they have a decent mic etc. Anyone know what I'm on about heh?

I did some sort of scheme at Radio Cornwall, CSV media, which was supposed to help me get into broadcast journalism (I can type shiite but I'm crap at saying it). One bloke on the course was the cliche gimp; he was bald, wore thick rimmed glasses and drove a Skoda. We went to interview some kids participating in an actvity week, and everyone of his interviews was delivered in a Mr Bean style asking them repeatedly "do you enjoy doing it?"

I phoned the NSPCC as soon as I got back to the office.

Mulligan!
Chubby, self-important badger of a man. But a nice bloke, despite that.
Dave, yep I remember him if he's the bloke I'm thinking of.
This would be...around...92-94 time.
Did hospital radio and then went to 10.17 as a trainee doing "News Features" - basically you go out and interview some old woman about her washing and try to make it interesting.
There were about 12 of us on the training course and I had my card marked from the get-go:

They gave us a piece about a ladies gym to edit and put music to.
I chose "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen and was told that wasn't appropriate.
*sigh*

Then for the final exam, we had to interview, edit, time and set to music a feature of our own choice.
Everyone went an interviewed their nan about the war etc etc.
I went with a mate to a 4x4 off-road competiton and special guests were Jonathan Palmer & Colin Murray.
So I blagged an interview with them.
10.17 was not pleased that a trainee could get stars, whilst they were stuck with local dignitaries and I didn't get chosen.
So next night went in and edited a 2 minute feature of Bill Hicks at his most angriest, with Nailbomb as the bed.
Played it, hit studio override and broadcast a swearing, shouting Bill Hicks to Harlow.

Best bit of 10.17 career?
The barbeque. Got bladdered and played softball after arguing with a security gaurd. Managed to whack the ball straight in Vicky Jame's baps and she collapsed.

Ah...memories of surly Goatboy in training

He was you know. I have pictures of him, with Harlow MP Bill Rammell.

Goaty, you worked at Ten 17? When was this? Did you know Gary Mulligan? And how much of a nob he was? What about Dave Rogerson? He's my mate, I believe he worked there for a bit writing Gary's 'skits'.

Ta, you too.

Dont worry about, until I went to college I was insular, quiet, shy and never spoke to people. I lived in books and music.
It was college, being in a band and realising I didn't have to make excuses to anybody for being me.

Came out of my shell and have been hurtling down the track ever since. Just relax and be yourself, you'll find people come to you.
