They charged me for the address I used to live at. Idiots. If I remember rightly, you have to sign a form and send it back to renew the licence, so it could be that the current residents have tried to pull a fast one on me. Is that right? About the having to send a form back. They send a postcard, that much I can remember, so it can't have been renewed without a signature can it?

Thanks Mum, I didn't know that because I'm 12 and spend my days watching MTV2.

I'm being sarcastic. I've already done that.

If you'd read it properly when filling it in, perhaps you wouldn't have that problem. They can't put you on direct debit without your approval and signature, which means that you signed for it without reading it properly.

Next time you move house, ask your bank for a list of direct debits associated with your account. In fact, do it now anyway, just in case there is something else hidden there for a rainy day.

It was only meant to be a 12 month (even though we only lived there for 8) license, and it wasn't meant to be direct debit. And it's at a really inconvenient time to lose that money.

Did you know that your licence has a change of address form attachde so that you can inform the TV Licence company when you move house so that they can switch your licence to cover the new address?

It's not their fault if you don't tell them that you've moved. I can assure you that they have a far bigger problem in terms of people flitting around without telling anybody than you do with the minor inconvenience of having a hundred odd quid coming out of your account.

In my company, we have hundreds of millions of pounds of debt attributed to people who move house without telling us. If people informed us, we'd not have those debts, and we could pass on the savings to the customers.

Hell, we actually reward customers for telling us that they move, and STILL they flit about without a care in the world.

Fools.

Just an update on this:

Contacted TV license people and they're sending me the forms to sort this mess out. And I rang my bank to cancel the Direct Debit. "Did you know there was a payment on the 1st?", "Yes, they took all my money, the b*stards!". Well, obviously I was more polite than that.

From what I remember (and this is going back over a year), is that we received a postcard saying that there wasn't a TV licence for our address and that we had to apply for one. So we did that, got the forms, sent them off and got our licence. They must have set up a direct debit for it, which is the only way I can see getting charged for one.

I bought a new TV about a month ago. A couple of weeks later I got a letter from the TV licencing people telling me that they had no record of anyone of my name holding a TV licence at the address I had registered when I bought the TV. Well of course they didn't because the TV licence was in the Ogres name, not in my name. So I had to fill in a form and get the Ogre to sign it, to say that actually we did have a licence.

Wouldn't it have been easier for them to check if the address was covered by a licence, rather than my name? What a waste of money sending out letters to people who already have licences.

I think they have started doing direct debit on TV Licenses now, so they can get the money without asking you, but you have to sign to start off so sounds a little weird/stupid.

Phone em up and give em a good shouting at.
