"The plans include a new pledge to the UK"
are we turning into America now?
I think we should sort out the scroungers, dole-scum and benefit cheats we have that are anglo-saxon, chips eating, tv watching, fully-paid up Brits before we start cowtowing to inflammatory bile like The Daily Mail.

Better prepare to deport a good portion of the population then....
It's a remarkably stupid idea, as I said before, it's a crowd pleaser and the kind of crap I'd expect the BNP to come up with, not our government.
More to the point, we have no culture, we knicked most of it from elsewhere and a good portion of the population doesn't care for it. I hate what we see as traditional english culture, in fact there is not a great deal I like about our culture full stop. Sure, I know about it, but to test immigrants on it seems to imply the rest of the population is equally informed, when they are not.
As for culture? Well, maybe we have some, maybe we don't.
When Ortega points out the Germany 2006 thing.. the steretype of Germans abroad feeling apologetic for the war, turn that around and I'd be there apologising for the hooligans.
I probably wouldn't want to walk around in an England shirt.
The thing about these tests though, the right to vote (and to get a passport) hinges on success.
Possibly a few years down the line we could have a significant number of 'permanant residents' in the country who are denied the right to vote.
That thought concerns me.
If England arnt banned from International football before then...
Mind you, my Grandad has been living here for about ten years and can speak as much english as i can Swahili...He first came over in the 60's mind and then went back to his homeland leaving my dad after he got married and had me!
A) speak an acceptable amount of english
and
B) know a reasonable amount about our culture.
yep, bring it on
Seriously, I think anyone who thinks this is going to solve any of the problems related to asylum seekers is quite short sighted. It's a stop gap, a feint, it fobs off a few more anti-asylum seeker people and thats it.
Even if they took it further, to basic literacy, we just had over half the 16 year olds, who for the most part lived here for 16 years, fail to come out of 11 years of education with 5 basic qualifications ! And they've spent all that time in a semi well funded and coherent program of education.
As for British history...
