That is DW's interest, He enjoys doing it. I'm sure there are others too who enjoy playing with figurines.
Don't mock someone because of their hobby - It just shows how small minded and idiotic you are.
I enjoy playing computer games (hence the name). I watch anime, I like to randomly open Xbox's and tinker with the insides, I like soldering stuff, I like computers.
I like it, And to be honest I don't give a f**k what anyone thinks about it.
But I've also got a HUGE collection of graphic novels, computer games, Terry Pratchett books....

1) they weren't my kids
2) they saw the helmets and begged me to let them try them on
3) I didn't "make" them wear them
4) they weren't naked.

Don't think it is sad at all. But if someone sold you a Strand magazine with Holmes stories in it from 1834 then you've been had, Conan Doyle wasn't born until 1859.
