Ruud van Nistelrooy was named as the best striker in Europe by UEFA who also handed a historic fair play award to Celtic fans.

The Manchester United frontman was honoured at UEFA's European Football Awards in Monte Carlo after he finished top scorer in last season's Champions League with 12 goals.
Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon was named the best goalkeeper and the overall most valuable player, and Pavel Nedved from the same club picked up the award for the best midfielder.

Real Madrid's Brazilian full-back Roberto Carlos was named best defender, while AC Milan skipper Paolo Maldini was given the UEFA president's award in recognition of his 17-year career and for captaining the winning side last season - the first time the award has gone to a current player.

Fairplay, nedved was easily the best midfielder last season, And Buffon and Van nistelrooy are fair enough to as they ae both matters of opinion, but which upper muppet gave roberto carlos the best defender award. I can (and if challenged will) name 3-5 better defenders from all the major leagues, the man is a really poor defender, he is undeniably skillful but doesn't defend that well and his contribution upfield is still highly over rated by people still dazzled by the free kick five yeas ago. It maybe the "real have to have an award" award, but this is just stupid canavaro, thuram, nesta were all in squads that reached the semi's and all played an outstanding part in there teams success, I'm getting pretty bored with carlos getting top defender awards when he is just skillful and doesn't do much, how he got in the world cup dream team is beyond me as his world cup was pretty awful to, he had one free kick and did nothing else. stupid.

If you think about it carefully Real are actually not the best club at all
there is probably one main reason they lose really badly sometimes like that lose to Mallorca last season 5-1. Here is the reason I bet you i'm right. They have way to many stars in there side. Figo solo man same with Zidane sure sometimes they can do magic but the main reason is that they do not pass enough.Carlos taking shots from way outside the box it would be ok if he was SUPA-ROBERTO but he aint and that's ther reason they aren't a really topclass team.

not that is the point, he can't defend for toffee, he is an awful defender, he is a very aggressive left midfielder who's been bunged in defence, like playing figo right back, but figo is actually good

He is. The odd free kick he scores is amazing but he misses so many, i heard the statistic eprcent earlier i think. That is poor. But still he is a good defender maybe not the best in the world but he is solid at the back.

The stats probably take into account every single free kick take by Beckham. Whether it was a shooting opportunity or not. Beckham pretty much took all of the free kicks at utd.

if it were out of actual shots he took from free kicks it would never be 6 out of every 100 he takes surely? Mind you, it took a few attempts against greece...

It was on Sky Sports News during the whole Beckham move saga so it isn't fictional and if it's inaccurate take it up with them if you want to argue Beckham's cause.

I highly argue those stats are even remotely accurate, and in regards to Beckham being the worst freekick taker... hmm and there was me thinking he was one of the top 3 set piece specialists of our era.
