They're not.
You know there is a special release version coming and nobody is forcing you to buy the 2-disc edition. Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you pay twice.
"Why not release them both at the same time? Waaaaaah"
Because from watching the Fellowship extended extras, it takes weeks/months to prepare the extended with brand new special effects, new music, reshooting just for those scenes etc.
And what about if you're just a casual fan and dont want to spend £25 and get a load of bits you dont care about? Why should you have to wait another 2 months?
Take a look at a film like The Terminator.
Same film being released yet again with maybe an extra deleted scene of poor quality.
That's ripping people off, releasing a DVD and then 4 months later releasing another version.
Not saying "Here's a 2 disc but if you really want the goodies, we'll be bringing another version out in a few weeks"
Honestly, some people....

No, it's so people buy it twice.

Same here. I have a 28inch 4:3 in my room but always like to watch in widescreen. Sure you get massive black borders but at least you get the whole picture. Plus having a 28inch tv the films are still pretty big on the screen.
I noticed we don't have fullscreen or widescreen for the Two Towers unlike Fellowship where we did. I don't care as I havent bought a single fullscreen DVD and wont do unless thats the only choice.
They were selling it early in my work... nobody dressed like Frodo though. Not like that poor bloke that looked like Harry Potter.
The Two Towers extended version looks good, an extra 43 minutes worth. However I am slighlty concerned that Jackson has said that many of the more humours have been restored; as the humour in the films to date has been my only bugbear.
And I do agree that everyone must know that; each of the films will have an extended version, it is possible TO RENT the theatrical cut and then purchase the other version in a few months time.
