"Waaaaa, Two Towers is being released on 4-discs in November, why are they ripping us off? Waaaaaaah"
They're not.
You know there is a special release version coming and nobody is forcing you to buy the 2-disc edition. Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you pay twice.

"Why not release them both at the same time? Waaaaaah"
Because from watching the Fellowship extended extras, it takes weeks/months to prepare the extended with brand new special effects, new music, reshooting just for those scenes etc.
And what about if you're just a casual fan and dont want to spend £25 and get a load of bits you dont care about? Why should you have to wait another 2 months?

Take a look at a film like The Terminator.
Same film being released yet again with maybe an extra deleted scene of poor quality.
That's ripping people off, releasing a DVD and then 4 months later releasing another version.
Not saying "Here's a 2 disc but if you really want the goodies, we'll be bringing another version out in a few weeks"

Honestly, some people....

I'll get the four disk edition, because the box looks better.

I like the use of the word "Waaaaaaah" in the original post, it fuels my imagination with hilarious scenes.

that, and I know plenty of geeks that would do just that.

If you ever played carmageddon 2, there was a sound byte that played every time you nearly ran someone over.

It went something like this "WAH - WAAAH - WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"
always brought a smile to my face, what a great game.

now I'm jabbering on like a monkey in a tree

I'll get my coat

Yes you do get the full picture. Alot of TV is actually widescreen, why do you get the borders on the top and bottom of most programs? Answer to make the picture a 2.35:1 on a widescreen TV. Sky has switched alot of films to proper widescreen on all channels, some 1.85:1 and a few are 2.35:1. TV and football matches are also widescreen on Sky so without using 4:3 letter box or having a widescreen TV you do lose part of the picture.

I have a 4:3 TV in my room and we have a widescreen downstairs. I mainly watch DVDs in my room and personnally couldnt stand to watch a fullscreen version when a widescreen is available. I understand that some people hate borders and think there losing some of the picture, but you not your getting the wider picture and you can see so much more, take a look at the examples in the links Mystique posted.

When you watch normal tv with widescreen then, unless it's a rare widescreen program, you don't get a full picture.

Actually, with widescreen you see *more* of the picture, you may have the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen if you haven't got a widescreen TV. But you really do see more with widescreen.

Trust me, widescreen is better.

I don't have a widescreen either, but I may get one. Until then I want to be able to see most of the picture.

Because I don't have widescreen, and I see no point watching around 1/2 tp 1/4 of the screen with nothing on. I will not buy a widescreen tv.

Ask yourselves this, why does America, the biggest buyer of consumer electronics, not seem to be embracing widescreen ? They have tons of full screen versions.

One of the reasons studios are pushing widescreen is so they don't have to convert the format from it's original, but hey, if you guys enjoy watching a thin slit of picture...

WHAT? ARE YOU INSANE!?

Full screen is blasphomy! Why in God's name would you want to even consider buying a fullscreen version?
