is also a good starting point, and probably more concise than I could put it.
One of my fave bits of the story was the Horus Heresy, in particualr the final battle on Earth that takes place around c31000 , the guy with the above site obviously has never heard of an obscure GW game actually called Horus Heresy, and that game was one of the only sources of the actual account of Earth's last stand. I'll post that tomorrow as well, as best as my memory serves anyway.

Wow. Could you write me some stuff? I'm striving to be like you. I'm got a mullet and everything, and I'm eating a bag of sugar right now... ;)
Seriously, I would love some 40K history. I am starting the road to knowing everything about something no-one cares about, and this is the chosen subject. I play three armies, and hang around A 40k chatforum. So I've passed the test for dork aprenticeship in most areas.

Wow.
Wow.
No, I've filled my nerd quota for today.
Though if you look at the first season closely, it was not until episode 10, Fallen Angel, that the viewers we're even shown an actual alien in the show. Pilot never showed anything other than lights, Deep Throat the technology, Conduit the possibility of them, Ice and Space their potential ties to the planet's history. Ice was a very early hint at the overall plot of the show over the 9 seasons. though no one realised at the time it's importance.
Didn't you love that one...you know...with the alien.

I can recount the entire history of the 40k universe, still, and I know nearly every X Files episode *smirks*
